River Walk in Chattanooga
River walk
This past weekend I met three of my friends in Chattanooga. Normally there are six of us, so we missed the two who could not attend. We stayed at a place called The Bode. As far as hotels go it was inexpensive, attractive and in a great location. That’s the good news.
The bad news is everything in the city was pretty much shut down due to the virus so the whole trip felt like we were in the Twilight Zone. The apartment we stayed in (two bedrooms, two baths, kitchen den area) was nice and clean but very little in the way of cooking utensils, no ice and the coffee maker didn’t work correctly. The masked guy downstairs was happy to supply us with ice but only between the hours of 8 to 4.
We walked to the Pickle Barrel because one of our friends had been there before and wanted us to see it. She’s a flight attendant for Delta (retiring after 42 years this year) and said it’s very much like the pubs in London. It was a quaint little place with a winding staircase up to a roof top but it was 90+ degrees and humid so we opted for inside. I wanted fried mushrooms but they didn’t have any. A couple down from us was having a basket of fried pickle spears. My friend practically drooled on their pickles, but they didn’t offer her one. She’s not shy so she talked to them for ten minutes about pickles and where they were from, etc.
Have you ever had fried pickles or fried mushrooms? Do you like them?
Even though it was unbearably hot we walked down to the river, passed the closed up shops and restaurants. Like I said, it was like being in the Twilight Zone. The photo bomber in the background is one of my friends….not sure why she was back there, maybe looking at boats. There were a few on the river.
Chattanooga is a great city and I’ve been there many times. Hope to go back when things are back to normal, whenever that may be.
This is a blog hop. Please link up and leave a comment!
The Pickle Barrel was fun! Thanks for stopping by!
I love fried mushrooms and rarely get them. Now you’ve got me thinking I need to go find some!
Yes it was all that! Thanks for stopping by Keith!
It’s a great city but pretty quiet right now!
Have fun on your beach trip, Lisa!
Yes it is! Friendships are great and help in hard times!
Great! I’m glad!
It was a fun pick-me-up!
A trip with friends sounds so blissful and after this lockdown heaven 🙂 I am sure you all had a fantastic time and maybe sometime soon all 6 of you will be on another trip ……..
Happy weekend Teresak!
Thanks for asking about the cats Teresa! I”ve been updating everyone on Tsunami for the past 3 weeks at Friendship Friday (just linked up the latest but you can read them all if you have time to catch up). Magellan is doing fine and praying he continues to stay well! 🙂
I had only heard of chatanooga from the choochoo so it was good to see some photos. We are being allowed to meet up with friends again and it is very good to just chat.
I have a trip planned for the beach with 3 of my friends in late August. I’m not sure what we’ll end up doing; it’ll depend on what is open or closed by then. And everyone’s health and case status in our state. But I know it will be a different kind of trip if we do get to go.
Hope you and your friends make it back to Chattanooga when you can really explore it properly together. I’ve only hit the high spots when I’ve been there so I’d like to explore it more myself one day.
The Pickle Barrel looks really cool. I went out to last week to Reno, Nv where they have fewer restrictions. They still require a mask and a lot of places are still closed down but it was nice to get away for a couple of days. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, things keep changing. One day, this is open and the next it is closed. I live in Alameda County and it is pretty much shut down but I can drive 20 minutes south to Santa Clara County and they have things open or I can drive 20 minutes north to Contra Costa County and they have different rules. It is a mess here.
Chattanooga is a place I would love to visit.
Just love the Pickel Barrel! It reminds me so much of the village pub I used to run, shabby chic and full of character.
Hi Teresa, the Pickle Barrel restaurant sounds like a lot of fun. Fried mushrooms for me but certainly fried pickles for my family…thanks for hosting the link party.
The Pickle Barrel looks amazing!
The heated matches would be interesting to watch!
Happy Tuesday, Teresa!
It’s strange going away now. We eased restrictions and so I took the kids away to help spend some money in the bushfire affected communities but with all the COVID stuff, it sort of felt a little irresponsible too (the hotel had so many rules and had blocked off all the public space toilets and limited the food availability so you were constantly reminded that perhaps you were being selfish not helpful…). It’s such a hard thing to balance… and to know what the right thing to do is…how do you help? That said, our state borders all closed down so if we’d planned interstate, it would have been a nightmare…
I understand. That’s why two of us didn’t go…not really a good time to be out. Thanks for stopping by and stay safe!
Thanks for stopping by!
I do like to watch a heated ping pong match heheh!
Looks like you had a nice get together even though a lot was still shut you still was able to get together 🙂
Have a pingpongtastic safe week ???
How nice to be able to get together with friends, Teresa! I am envious of your good time, even if the setting was not as good as you hoped for. This COVID virus has me so paranoid I have avoided all social events this summer. I am very worried I would not do well if I got ill with it. I’ve visited Chatanooga many years ago when my son was in a baseball tournament. It’s a great town. That Pickle Barrel restaurant looks very fun! I love fried mushrooms and would have also ordered them–I never had fried pickles but I think I’d like them.
