A New Product to Improve Car Seat Safety and Usability

Car seat safety is important to parents and grandparents. Anyone who has watched videos of car crashes knows that if a child isn’t in a car seat and buckled properly, bad things can and do happen.

I want to do everything I can to keep my grandchildren safe when they are with me and I know the importance of car seats but let’s face it, they are not grandparent friendly. They are hard to transfer from one vehicle to another and after you get to your destination, then the button on the car seat is a pain to unfasten.

The reason it’s so hard to push in is because it takes 9 pounds of pressure to release. Car seat safety regulations require that amount of pressure to insure that children can’t unbuckle themselves. That’s good but what happens when Nana or Poppa have arthritis or carpal tunnel and can’t push the button hard enough to make it release?

Have you ever wondered, “What if I did have a car accident and I needed to get my grandchild (or child) out of the car in a hurry and I couldn’t because I can’t push the button in?”

I’m not super strong but I should be able to get the thing to release.  Yet, time and time again I’ve had to call for my husband to come get them out. Fortunately, I’m not the only Nana that has that problem.

Meet Barbara Heilman and Her Daughter Becca Davison

Barbara Heilman, an Occupational Therapist, and when her daughter Becca Davison had a baby, Barbara discovered that she had trouble unfastening her grandchild from their car seat.  She and her daughter talked about car seat safety and the possibility that other grandparents or parents might have the same problem. Together they invented UnbuckleMe. It is a small plastic tool that makes it easier to unbuckle a standard child’s car seat buckle.

I can’t tell you how much easier it makes getting my grandchildren out of the car, so I decided to show you! They measured, and it actually reduces the force required by more than 50%!
