Getting the Covid Vaccination and Scary Monsters
Covid Vaccination
When I was young my biggest worries were things I now see were foolish like “Who would I go with to Prom” (ours was called Junior/Senior banquet) or “Would I get to go to the Boogie (old folks name for a dance) on Saturday night?” When you are 16 life looks a whole lot different than it does from where I’m standing now, which is why I want to encourage you to get vaccinated.
I really empathize with most of the reasons younger folks aren’t getting vaccinated. Some I’ve heard are, “I don’t want to be a guinea pig. I’ll wait a couple years” and “I’m young and healthy so it won’t effect me very much.”
Today I read a quote by Dr. Scott Gottleib (former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration). He said, “The delta variant is so contagious it will infect most unvaccinated people. It is going to be the most serious virus they will get in their lifetime in terms of the risk of putting them in the hospital.”
Bill’s Covid Journey
Most of you know about my husband’s long and intense fight with Covid but you may not know he’s still fighting the after effects of it. Once he passed out at rehab because his blood pressure bottomed out…yesterday it almost happened again. We ended up in Dr. Thornbury’s office where Bill’s B.P. got extremely low. Three nurses and I caught him as his knees buckled and he almost went down. Dr. Thornbury and his staff took care of us and then sent us to the E.R. Bill was given fluids and tests were run.
There’s a technical term for what Bill is experiencing but I can’t remember it, pronounce it or spell it, so I’ll tell you in my words. Basically Covid has messed with his response to things we do automatically. We don’t think about blinking…we just blink. We don’t think about breathing…we just breathe. We don’t think about our blood pressure….it just adjusts to our level of activity…except occasionally Bill’s isn’t adjusting. When that happens his blood pressure gets too low, he feels weak and if he doesn’t lay down he can pass out.
We are so thankful that Bill is getting better but the battle isn’t over. Covid can wreak havoc with your heart, your blood pressure, and lots of other things we take for granted. If Covid were a monster it would NOT be a nice one like Cookie Monster. It would be Godzilla-King of the Monsters.
To those of you who aren’t vaccinated, please go get a shot today. Maybe you won’t get Covid, but maybe you will. Don’t play Russian roulette with your life. Just ask someone who has been through what Bill has, or someone who is a “long hauler” if they would have taken a vaccine prior to getting sick?
I think you know the answer to that question.
Don’t let Godzilla get you. Go get a Covid vaccination today!

I agree Pennie! Thank you for commenting!
Thank you Judy and I agree!
I am going to try and find that article you mention in your comment. I’m glad your brother in law is okay and hope he stays well. Thank you so much for commenting and stay safe!
Diane, you are so sweet and yes there are so many who think it can’t happen to them.
Thanks so much for commenting Pennie! I agree. People are waiting too long!
I don’t think people take the virus seriously until it hits close to home, and even then, some come out with a “but we survived it…” narrative. Which isn’t helpful.
We prayed every day for Bill. And continue to pray. This disease is so unpredictable. Why waste one moment of time assuming you won’t be in the group that suffers, even dies from its vagaries.
But I’ve wondered for years why, with the mountain of evidence against it, people continue to smoke.
The ‘it can’t happen to me’ theory has been around for a very long time!
I started to pray for a vaccine the moment I first heard Covid described as a pandemic. These vaccines are an answer to prayer for me. For that reason alone, I’d NEVER turn them down!
My brother in law survived COVID in April of 2020 and, although his post-COVID symptoms weren’t as extensive as your husband’s, I’ve followed various Long-Covid stories with interest. I’m happy that your husband is getting better. There was recently an article in, I think, the NY Times magazine that talked about what you describe, and I’m hoping that medicine can get a handle on it. The tragedy is that many people are so poisoned with misinformation about the vaccine (I think we all know some of them), I fear that even testimonies from Long-Covid survivors or people who are still hospitalized but nearly died, will just be dismissed. “It can’t happen to me!” or “I’ll take my chances rather than take that horrible vaccine.”
Thanks so much for commenting Judy!
I’m so glad your husband is doing better. And I totally agree, everyone should get a vaccine who can. Why take the chance with your health.
