What’s In Your Attic? Reflections From The Kitchen Sink
What’s in your attic?
An attic can be a scary place…especially when kids are in charge of its organization.
I’ve had four surgeries in the last five years. Going to the attic wasn’t on my to do list. Some of my favorite Christmas items were missing though, so I was determined to find them.
Holy hotcakes, the attic was a disaster!
During my intense grief and surgery healing days, I told the kids, “If you can’t part with something, stick it in a tote and put it upstairs.”
To teenaged boys that’s the equivalent of “pitch it in a box, open the attic, and set the box down.”
…and set the boxes down they did.
I didn’t open every box. I just started pushing. And I pushed. And I pushed. And I pushed.
I didn’t count totes either. I don’t want to know.
I am pretty sure there are 142 Nerf guns, 578 wrestling figures, and 3,873 books up there. Oh, and a lot of stuffed animals.
There is now a small semblance of order at least, and the holiday decor will be contained to one area after this adventure. I told the boys who were quick to play the finger-pointing blame game with each other that I am awake from the intense grief sleep now, and this won’t happen again.
Absolutely everything that has a smidgen of Christmas flair has been brought down from the mostly childhood hoarding zone, so now I’m touching every piece and deciding its fate. I may finish by next Christmas…
I definitely will need some more coffee for the task…
…until next time…
