The Horrifying Truth About School Shootings

Truth About School Shootings

To say I am terrified of school shootings would be an understatement. I’m a former teacher and now a substitute teacher, but that’s not what worries me. It’s my grandchildren.

How Bad Is it?

According to Education Week….

There were 51 school shootings in 2022 that resulted in injuries or deaths, the most in a single year since Education Week began tracking such incidents in 2018. Prior to 2022, the highest number of school shootings with injuries or deaths was last year when there were 35. There were 10 in 2020, and 24 each in 2019 and 2018.”

The shooting in Nashville this week brought tears to my eyes and renewed the ache in my heart that happens every time one of these incidents occur. Three innocent 9 year olds and 3 adults were shot and killed. Why does this keep happening?

If you can bear it, look through these photos . School shootings are breaking hearts all across our country.

In Nashville all it took was 14 minutes to end the lives of 6 precious souls. I googled “What can you do in 14 minutes and got the response “30 Things You Can Do In 15 Minutes.” Not one of those 30 things involved killing innocent people.

Parents and Grandparents

Every time I hear sirens my heart skips a beat, does yours? As a grandparent, what if anything can I do to stop it? Yes, I’m praying about it every day, but we have to do more.

I posted about the shooting on my NanaHood facebook page and a reader from Australia said that they had one school shooting there and then changed gun laws and haven’t had any since.

How We Compare To The Rest Of The World

How does the U.S. compare to the rest of the world? We have had 57 times as many school shootings as the other major industrialized nations combined. If that doesn’t make your jaw drop, nothing will.

What’s Wrong With Us?

I never thought this was possible but….

Guns are now the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No other developed economy has as many violent firearm deaths as the U.S., according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

Reasons for The Truth About School Shootings

There are lots of reasons but easy access to guns and social media are at the top of the list.

Should we just throw up our hands and say there’s nothing we can do? I don’t think so and I bet you don’t either.

There’s a song called “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.” If this craziness is going to stop it has to begin with us. For suggestions about what can be done about school shootings I hope you will read this article.

And pray that enough people will demand that something be done.

(I posted no pictures of victims with this post because every victim in the U.S. deserves recognition and there were far too many to include.)

  1. Such a heartbreaking subject for sure! I’ve been hearing how other countries changed their laws much more quickly and have had great results. We should learn from this! I also believe there is an issue in parenting….not being present enough in children’s lives when they need us the most. I pray that our country can wisen up!
