Instant Pot Kahlua Pork Recipe

One of my favorite Hawaiian dishes growing up was mom’s Kahlua Pork. The smoky flavors of tender shredded pork over steamed rice was always popular in our house. Fast forward years later, and my sister and I are still cooking the dish for our own families. With a little tweaking, we’ve come up with a delicious and simple instant pot recipe version we both use now.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Ingredients:

  • 5-7 lbs Pork Shoulder (or Pork Butt)
  • 1.5 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Hawaiian Pink Himalaya Sea Salt (or any coarse sea salt)
  • 2-3 tsp liquid smoke
  • 3/4 cup water

Preparation:

  • fill IP with 3/4 cup water
  • add liquid smoke
  • cut the pork into thirds and coat with sea salt, then place in the IP
  • add garlic
  • cook on high pressure for 90 minutes
  • allow to naturally release for 20-30 minutes
  • remove and place in a large bowl for shredding
  • coat with drippings from IP

Best Side Dishes for Kahlua Pork

Traditionally, kahlua pork is best served over or on the side of a bed of steamed rice. Drizzling extra broth on your rice from the instant pot adds to the rich, smoky flavoring. You’ll also love pairing your kahlua pork with creamy Hawaiian macaroni salad.

While we love fresh Hawaiian rolls with this dish, some of the kids prefer to make mini sandwiches with the kahlua pork and rolls. This is also a great way to enjoy your leftovers!

Leftover Kahlua Pork Tip

To keep your kahlua pork tender, coat your leftovers with broth from the instant pot. You’ll love how juicy it keeps the shredded pork over the next couple days. That is, if you have any left that long!
