Apple Bite Bombs

Apple Bite Bombs

These are little bites of apple pie filling wrapped in pie dough, deep-fried, then brushed with butter and rolled in brown sugar. Sound good? It’s like a little fruity explosion in your mouth—thus the name, Apple Bite Bombs.

This is my grandson (and future chef) enjoying working in the kitchen with his mom. Little ones can help with the dough and they love “painting” the bite bombs with butter but we kept him and his sister far away from the hot oil. Kids and deep frying don’t mix!

We used Pillsbury ready to use pie crust. Then we took a rolling pin and flattened them some and make the crust go further. Then we took an average size drinking glass and cut out the circles. This is what they look like with the filling inside and after you fold them over and mash the dough with the fork. This time we used apple pie filling but we plan on trying blueberry and peach next time.

My husband has a deep fryer that he uses for French fries so we used it on the bite bombs. All we had to do was dip them in, wait until they turned a light brown, and then remove. Total cooking time was about one minute and 30 seconds, but depending on if you like them crunchy or softer you might want to adjust the amount of time.

These are what they look like after they come out of the frier and are placed on paper towel to cool. Notice the golden brown color. That’s just about perfect for these little pies.

And here you can see what they look like after they are dipped. You can adjust how much sugar and cinnamon you want on them. Shake some off if you get more than you need. We shook some off and then devoured them with a glass of milk. It didn’t take long before they all disappeared!

Here’s What You Need

1 quart vegetable oil

1 package prepared refrigerated pie crust

1 can apple pie filling

1 tbsp. pure maple syrup

1 tsp. Cinnamon

3 tbsp butter

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 Cup Cinnamon

Here’s How You Make Them

Heat your oil and start heating your pie filling on top of the stove over medium heat. Add maple syrup and cinnamon. Remove from stove and set aside.

Get your pie crust out of package (or if you are really industrious you can make your own homemade crust) Roll the crust out and make it thinner but not too thin.

Take a drinking glass and and use it to cut circles out for you bomb bites. Take the dough you don’t use, mash it together, roll out and make more circles.

Now take your dough circles and put some pie filling in the middle. Take a fork and mash the edges to seal them.

By now your oil is hot so be really careful. Place several bite bombs in the oil. Use tongs to turn them over and do about 30 seconds on each side.  They will be light brown like the picture.  Put on paper towels to cool.

When you have all your bite bombs finished cooking, mix your brown sugar and cinnamon in a Ziploc bag and get ready to coat them. Take melted butter (I melt it in micro-wave) and brush each side of bite bombs with butter using a pastry brush.

After they are brushed with butter place in the bag with cinnamon and sugar and seal the bag. Shake the bag gently until bite bombs are coated.

You are done! Eat them and enjoy!

If you don’t have a deep fryer here are a couple of options you might like. The first one is similar to what we have. It works great and is easy to use.

I would love to try one of these air fryers. I’ve heard great things about them but haven’t tried one yet. Have you? Did you it or not so much? I’d love to know!
