Kids and Cakes

by Tiffany Secula

Growing up there was always something super special about birthdays. No, not just the presents, but at our house it was the cake!  We decided how we wanted our cake decorated then Mama (my mom’s mom) would do what ever it took to make it. She searched stores high and low for the perfect pan to find creative ways to make the cakes her grandbabies wanted!

Sadly, I lost that grandmother in 2000 and I still miss her terribly. I do have a special link that keeps up bonded though, and that is of course… cake! I inherited all of my Mama’s many cake pans and her love for making them! It has been such a joy over the years to make them for my own children and for others.

I have grown a lot in my cake work. I have gotten braver at experimenting with recipes or methods of making things on the cakes themselves: from free-handing a cow riding a tractor, making a movie logo out of chocolate or a volcano out of rice krispie treats, it is always fun.

Not all of my cakes have been successes, but of course most of the time the kids didn’t care what they looked like as long as they were yummy! I made an owl cake for my niece last weekend, and am looking forward to making another owl cake this weekend for a start up party for my dear friend’s new business!

I love making them, although the work involved gets rough on the hands squeezing out all that frosting. My waistline, however is glad birthday’s don’t come around too often!

Here are some of my cake creations…..Happy Weekend everyone!

Tiffany
