Fighting the Quarantine 19-Reflections from the Kitchen Sink

Fighting the Quarantine 19

Near the start of this COVID home bound time, I joked that the 19 in COVID-19 represented the number of pounds one would gain during the time at home. Folks had scurried to the stores and purchased items akin to a big snowstorm’s grocery run—lots of carbs and snacks. As time passed and we found we would be at home longer, those quick fix foods lost their allure, and many found themselves cooking full meals at least once a day. I even made a mini Thanksgiving dinner one day. All of that is dandy until the time comes to put pants on that button, so I reached out to friends on my Facebook for their healthy go tos, and here are some of the replies.

While some of the replies were truthful but silly, others were things I hadn’t thought of here at Chez Campbell. Here are some screenshots of sons of my faves—

I’ve got teenaged boys, so it seems they can eat the entire fridge and not gain an ounce. Mom, on the other hand, has to be aware of the sticktoitiveness of almost every splurge. I have indeed pudged four or five pounds depending on the day and my scale’s mood. My clothes fit but not the way I like.

When my husband was alive, I often would fix desserts he liked that I wouldn’t eat just so I wouldn’t be tempted. My boys and I have similar tastes, so that puts a kink in my sweets strategy. During this lockdown time, I don’t have my bonus kids from church and school crashing my kitchen every week either! The lingering of prepared foods tests the willpower more than those empty pans I’m used to finding.

Heading into summer, I need to get back in my groove. This older body doesn’t drop weight like it once did, so I need to be resolved to not let too much fluff attach itself.

I’m thinking this honey bun cake by the coffee pot needs to hide while I make this second cup.

Maybe I should use foil to cover things instead of plastic wrap next time

I bake, too.

…until next time…
