The Goodbye Gift

I received a touching response from a reader yesterday in response to my request for stories that focus on doing or giving to others during Less of Me Month here at NanaHood.

Glenda wrote- “Several months ago I happened upon this blog,  www.greysonsgift.blogspot.com and it really touched my heart. In response I made twelve little blankets and sent them. It’s such a wonderful project!”

Glenda is right, it is a wonderful project, but a sad one as well. If ever there is a time that we need comforting it’s when we lose a loved one. The project Glenda is referring to came about because of the loss of a child. A young mother gave birth to a still born baby boy; a baby so tiny that he only weighed 1 pound. She wrapped him in a baby blanket and held him as she told him goodbye. The sight of such a tiny baby swathed in blankets that were way too big stayed with her and she started a project in her son’s honor.  Now women all across America are making blankets and sending them to hospitals and funeral homes. When you consider that 30% of all pregnancies end in fetal demise it’s easy to see that the need for these blankets is great.

When I went to the site and read about this mother and her project my heart ached for her and for the thousands of other women who have shared her experience.  Just last week I got a phone call from a dear friend whose wife is going through the same thing. I added them to my prayer list and have prayed for them daily since then. Reading about these blankets was a forceful reminder that I need to show my love for others by doing something. I don’t sew (not even buttons) but I do write. Back to the post office I go today with a card to let a young couple know that I care, that I’m thinking of them and praying for them.

Please take a moment and go to the blog I mentioned above. Thank you Glenda for sharing this story with us. Readers, I want to hear from you! Share ways that you or people you know reach out to others by using the contact form here at NanaHood.

God bless each of you and remember…”Think a little more of others and a little less of me.”

On a lighter (and colder) note….

Baby it’s cold outside here in Kentucky!

No school today for my guys. I woke up this morning and there were three teenage boys draped across two couches and one chair, sound asleep and there were more upstairs. I think (at last count) there ten guys here and a few more on their way to go sledding.

Of course they woke up starving and I went to the refrigerator and this is what I found.

empty bottles

No milk, no juice, no soda, not even one bottled water left and I promise when I went to bed last night the refrigerator was NOT empty.

I fed them breakfast and they didn’t complain about having to drink tap water. Then I sent them out to load the stove.

wood stoveOf all the things I love about my home, the wood stove is right at the top of the list. It keeps our house warm and toasty for a fraction of the cost it would take to heat it with gas or electricity.

The snow is still falling…the boys are still eating…life is good. Stay warm, check on your neighbors and remember to keep outside animals warm! Talk to you tomorrow my cyber friends!   Teresa
