This August my husband, Bill, and I will have been married 35 years. When we said “I do” we didn’t have a clue where the road of life would take us, but we knew we wanted to spend our journey walking side by side.
A year after we were married our first child was born, a son. We loved him so much that we were sure we could never love another the way we did him, but we were wrong. We were blessed with a daughter, another son and then identical twin boys.
It didn’t take long for us to realize that the bigger the family, the more money we needed. I went to work teaching and Bill went back to school, worked nights and slept 5 or 6 hours in the afternoon and then did it all again the next day. While all that was going on we hosted sleepovers, swim parties and tons of impromptu basketball games on the ball court in the backyard. Some days we were both so tired we would fall asleep with which ever child we were tucking in, but it was worth it.
Bill was a strong, yet gentle father and he answered to “Dad” with great pride. These days his grandchildren call him Poppa, and if you ask him he won’t hesitate to tell you how blessed he is.
When Bill and I met I knew he was different. After we dated awhile I knew what it was about him that made him unique. He is truly a man of character. He is honest, hard working and treats everyone he meets equally. He is a man of faith and honor.
When my mother was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer and I felt like the world was caving in on me, Bill held my hand and cried with me. Five years later we lost my dad, and again he was my anchor. Â He has always been my strength in times of turmoil.
