Short Shorts, Mini Skirts, & Halter Tops. Styles That Scare The Crap Out Of Me Now
I walked into a closet tonight where my daughter-in-law had stored some clothes. Hanging on a hanger were the shortest pair of shorts I’ve ever seen. Well, since the 1970’s anyway. That’s when I was a teenager and our shorts were so short they threatened to show our underwear.
I have to admit I stood there staring at the shorts and remembering. Short shorts. Halter Tops. Mini skirts. Low cut bell bottoms. I wore them all, much to my mother’s dismay.
Did I look good in them? I don’t know. Maybe I carried some of the 70’s fashion off, but definitely not all of it. My mother was lenient. She let me get away with more than she probably should have but she was married at 16 and had me the next year. By the time I was a teen, she knew to pick her battles. Although we did argue occasionally about my wardrobe, it wasn’t frequent.
One fad that I didn’t mention before that I also participated in was the “disco dress.” Mine was silver with slits up the sides. When I wore it I imagined I was starring opposite John Travolta in Disco Fever.
I do still love and treasure the music from that movie. I was a Bee Gees fan then and still am.
I’m sure when my grandchildren read this post someday they will find it hard to imagine their Nana wearing short shorts or a disco dress. As hard as it is to believe, Nana was young once. And so was Poppa. Every couple’s story begins somewhere and ours began in the 70’s.
Why do those fashion fads scare me now? Because I picture myself wearing them now and believe me, it’s not a pretty sight.
How about you? What styles were popular when you were young?
