Quotes from Christmas Movies that Make You Think

Quotes from Christmas Movies

When we watch the same movies year after year, the quotes stick in our brains. I have a sign with the words “Wash your hands you filthy animal” posted over the toilet. It makes me laugh and is a good reminder for the grandchildren to wash up before leaving the bathroom. (From the movie Home Alone).

My enquiring mind wants to know what are your favorite Christmas movies and Christmas quotes?

Instead of telling you about my favorite Christmas flicks, I’m going to give you a quote from the movie and see if you can guess who said it and which movie it came from. Answers will be in the comments at the end of the post. Leave a comment and let me know if you guessed them all correctly. The prize is a BIG air hug from me to you!

We will start with the easiest first.

Christmas Movie Number One

The whole city is assembled in a family living room. They have brought money to donate to help their friend so he won’t lose his business. The man who is about to lose his business has a brother who raises his glass and proposes a toast to “the richest man in town.” His brother isn’t technically rich but then we are reminded that, “No man is a failure who has friends.”

We watch this one every Christmas and I always cry at the end but after Bill’s Covid experience (he went in the hospital before Christmas and didn’t get home until April 6th of the next year) I really cried that Christmas when I watched it. Why? Because I realized we live in the same town this movie depicts and Bill and I have so many good, dear friends who “prayed us through” that very hard time in our lives.

I have to say it again….Thank you friends for all you did for us during that very hard time.

Christmas Movie Number Two

“Sometimes life will bring you to your knees, but that’s when you know you’ve gotten somewhere, because then the only place to go is up!

There are so many life lessons in this movie. The power of faith and prayer during hard times. The fact that poverty doesn’t have to ruin your life if you have love and a dose of determination bigger than the hairstyles from the 80’s.

This is one of my favorite movies because it’s a true story about a little girl who grew up to be rich and famous but is so kind and generous that she is a national treasure.

Christmas Movie Number Three

When we are young it’s tempting to give in to peer pressure but there are more reasons than there are colors in the rainbow as to why we should “remain true to our raising” (my mother’s words). For one thing every action has a consequence and sometimes we don’t like the price we have to pay for a bad choice. Remember this line, “Well, I Double dog dare you!” Adults know what is bound to happen to a child that licks a pole, but kids not so much. Besides It’s wimpy when you don’t take a dare….or could it be the smarter choice?

When my husband was very young and his cousins all got together Bill dared his sweet cousin, Donna, to lick the pole outside his house. She did and the result was the same thing that happened in the movie. Making wise choices is soooo important for children (and adults) because like I said before, we may not like the consequences.

Another favorite from this movie is how the family recovers when the neighbors canines devour their Christmas turkey. They don’t freak out. They just go with Plan B and there’s a great scene of them all eating together and laughing. Laughter can be a great healer if we remember not to take ourselves or life too seriously.

Movie Number Four

“We’re gonna have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas.” Over the years I have learned to lower my expectations of the holiday season. Family Christmas events may not be as crazy as they are in this movie, but we have had some crazy moments. (Like the year of the underwear tree and the time I tied our three legged tree to the book shelves but the string didn’t hold. Fortunately it didn’t fall on any children and eventually we got the mess cleaned up)

Christmas often doesn’t turn out as we planned and sometimes doesn’t meet our expectations.

One year the flu hit many of us. The year Bill was sick, and the year mom was sick were the two worst Christmas’s for our family. So if you are reading this and you have a loved one who is sick or who passed this year….just. get. through. it.

There’s no sugar coating it. Life is hard, messy and sometimes very sad. You can not make yourself feel anything other than what you feel.

Movie Number Five

Does somebody need a hug?

I’m a hugger. My grandkids know that I latch on and squeeze until they can wiggle out of my grasp. Not long ago a lady I know who is a widow talked about how much she missed the comfort of a big hug. When I read that my heart ached for her. Hugs are powerful for lots of reasons. In this movie the main character is full of love and wants to share it with others but because he is different from everyone else he is shunned (for awhile).

This Christmas give hugs. One size fits all and they can’t take it back to the store!
