Nigerian Dwarf Goats Love Animal Crackers

We purchased 8 Nigerian Dwarf Goats from a couple who have over 200 of them. They have raised them for many years and when it comes to this particular breed of goat, they are very knowledgeable. So when Dave (The Goat Whisperer) mentioned in passing that the goats liked animal crackers as a snack, I made a mental note to take them some.

(Don’t judge me I had to sample a few to make sure they were okay for the goats!)

If this is the first time you have heard of Nigerian Dwarf Goats and you want to know more about them then you can read about them here. For me it was love at first sight. These goats are about 3 years old and are so gentle and tame you can pet them and treat them pretty much the same way you would a dog.

Snack Time

Today I had a meeting with two gentlemen about some fencing we intend to do and while they watched I went in with the goats and started hand feeding them animal crackers. To say I was surprised by their enthusiasm for animal crackers would be a BIG understatement. Once they realized what I had in the plastic container they came at me the same way I once attacked my mom’s Italian Cream Cake.

I started feeding them sitting down on the stairs you see here but they climbed up in my lap and managed to knock me off the stairs and onto the ground. I held on tight to the container to keep them from taking it while they trounced me with their tiny hooves.

It’s hard to maintain your dignity in front of strangers when you are being mauled by Nigerian Dwarf Goats. After I rolled around a bit I finally managed to get to my feet. One of the goats got their head in the container and almost got it stuck.

The guys watching me were gentlemen and didn’t laugh out loud but I bet when they got down the road they were hee-hawing. I would have been.

FYI-the fencing guys made these pictures otherwise I would not have had souvenir photos of this debacle. They were nice enough NOT to photograph me on the ground (or if they did they didn’t send it to me….maybe they are selling it to one of those trashy magazines you see in the grocery check out line with the headline “Grandmother Attacked by 8 Dwarfs“- you know those magazines love to embellish).

As you can tell by the last picture my glasses got knocked askew and I was pretty frazzled. I came home and hopped in the shower. My clothes had to be washed, they were covered in dirt, mud and probably a little goat poop.

There’s no way around it. These goats got my goat.

If I feed them animal crackers again it will definitely be through the fence.

  1. LOL!! I have 3 nigerian dwarfs and when I put them in every night after they are finished eating their food, I have a sandwich bag with 10-15 animal cookies in it for each goat AND THEY KNOW! It only takes about 5 minutes after they finish and all 3 will stand in front of me and talk…as if telling me they’re ready! I have to stand against the wall feeding them or they will knock me down, they LOVE their animal cookies!

  2. Aww, love you too. Come visit and bring some animal crackers and I’ll take you to feed the goats!

  4. I once asked Albert Dilley, (the goat man) if goats could be engineered to just eat weeds, and not flowers, as they have engineered hens to lay eggs with less cholesterol… He said, no, not happening…why, he said, they sometimes try to eat my clothes that I am wearing!!!

  5. Oh my goodness, this was wonderful. Just the description of it was good, but the pictures made it even more delightful. I never would have dreamed that a goat would like animal crackers. I love baby goats. they are so adorable. Thank you for sharing this with us. You made me giggle.
