Favorite Things

Back when Oprah’s television show was on my favorite event was when she shared her favorite things and gave everyone in the audience one of whatever she was talking about. I know I’m not Oprah and I sure can’t afford to give each of you some of my favorite things, but I can share some of them with you as gift ideas for Mother’s Day.

I’m for anything that makes cleaning easier and as a dog mom I’m aware that my fur babies shed. That being said I have yet to buy a robot vacuum. I want one, I really do, but every time I look at them I think of all the groceries I could buy with what they cost. Since this is a favorite things list I’m including this because I would LOVE to have one. I just don’t want to pay for it. So (kids are you listening) this is something that would really make your mom happy this Mother’s Day.

Next on my list would be a device that I didn’t even know existed until I started working on my Mother’s Day Wish List. How cool would it be to be able to keep your coffee hot and charge your phone at the same time? I mean if I want my coffee hot I have to zap it in the microwave and if I want my phone charged I have to go in search of a charger (those things disappear around here faster that dog treats). Did you know they make something that will do both those things and make it super easy? Well, they do and I’d love to have one and I bet you would too!

I have needed a new hair dryer for years and haven’t taken the time to buy one. I researched the best blow dryers and this one came highly recommended. If my kids don’t take this hint and buy me one I will order it soon!

Every mom and nana I know needs a good folding chair she can take to ballgames, camping or maybe to watch fireworks on the 4th. If you aren’t picky you can get a cheap one at a drug store or somewhere for under 10 bucks but if you want a really nice chair, check this one out. Here are some things I like about it….

  • Sturdy powder-coated steel frame and 600D polyester fabric provides stability and comfort
  • Each adjustable armrest comes with a cup holder and side pocket for maximum storage
  • Includes convenient shoulder carry bag, allowing you to transport and store chair with ease
  • The ALPS Mountaineering King Kong is on our best sellers list; you’ll know why as soon as you take a seat
  • Dimensions: 38″ W x 20″ D x 38″ H, Weight: 12.5 lbs.; Weight Capacity: 800 lbs.

I love to read. There are few things better in life than a really good book. I wrote a post a few weeks ago about what I’ve been reading. Check it out in case you haven’t read them, they were winners! Why not give the gift of a good book to mom?

Music is the universal language and chances are your mom has some favorite tunes from back in the day you may not even know about. Snoop around a bit and find out what she listens to on Pandora or look at her play list and get some ideas. If she graduated high school during the 70’s she might like one of my fav’s, Carly Simon. As a good friend reminded me the other day, I wore that 8 track out. And if you don’t know what an 8 track is…go ask your grandparents!

And before I go I have to remind you that when you are shopping for mom, don’t leave Nana out! Every grandma you know would love to have a copy of my new book (shameless plug). Order one by clicking here.

Here’s a sneak peek of my book inside one of the first chapters……

If I had to choose just one thing that made the biggest difference between the life I lead and the life my grandmother led, without a doubt it would be the amount of choices I have that weren’t available to her. Perhaps you had a grandmother like my Grandma Layne, or who was a member of her generation? Think about the opportunities we have that our grandmothers didn’t.

My grandmother would have never dreamed of going to college. I never considered that I wouldn’t get a degree. Most women my age have had careers and many of us are still working, some because of necessity and some just because we enjoy what we do. Grandmothers today may choose to grow their own food and can or freeze it, but they have the option of shopping at supermarkets where the selection of food items would seem mind boggling to past generations.

Another big difference between grandmothers then and now is how we spend our leisure time. My grandmother darned socks or knitted in her spare time. Eventually they were able to afford a telephone and a television with an antenna that got three stations, sometimes just two if the wind wasn’t blowing from the right direction. They didn’t go to sporting events or movies because they didn’t have the money. They got up when the sun rose and worked until the sun set in the evening.

When you think about a typical day in the life of my grandmother and compare it to a typical day in my life, it’s obvious that times have changed. I talk to more people in a single day than my grandmother probably did in a year. Her world was very limited. With the invention of the Internet, our world is global.

Is it any wonder that many of us struggle to balance our home and work lives?

I hope that will entice you to buy the book for yourself or for a grandmother you know! Happy Mother’s Day May 12th! You still have some time to get your Mom and Nana a great gift!
