Mother and Daughter Walking Side By Side

Did you know that the phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” is sometimes attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte? According to Wikipedia (which is always right, right?) He said “Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu’un long discours,” or “A good sketch is better than a long speech”.

Where ever the quote came from…it’s so true. When my cousin, Kiera, sent this picture to me I looked at it for a long time and thought about everything my cousin Martha (Kiera’s mom) has been through and how her mother (My Aunt Roberta) has walked by her side every step of the way, it brought tears to my eyes.

Martha’s journey has been long and difficult but with the support of her mother and many others she continues to fight. Those of us who love her dearly are consistently amazed by her determination and positive attitude.

As I said, this picture was made by Martha’s daughter who drove her mother and grandmother to a doctor’s appointment. She snapped this as they were walking down the hall to see the Oncologist. When I look at this photo I see two brave, faith-filled women who are both wonderful examples of the virtuous woman talked about in Proverbs 31. And even though they aren’t in the photo, I see Kiera and her two sisters, following in their mother’s and grandmother’s footsteps.

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” Washington Irving
