Mom’s Advice to Graduates
Yesterday’s post was about the graduation celebration we had at church. In case you didn’t get a good luck at the cupcakes my daughter made for the party, here’s a close up.
The little graduation caps had fortunes (like fortune cookies do) inside them. The soon to be graduates enjoyed opening them up and reading them. Some of the fortunes were good for a laugh, but no one took them seriously. I started thinking about the fortunes last night and got to wishing there was a way for me to put some Mom Advice into those caps (and into their heads).
Here are a few prime pieces of Mom Advice I would include.
1. Don’t skip breakfast….it really is the most important meal of the day and if you skip it your brain won’t work as well in class.
2. Change your sheets. Girls usually know this but for some reason guys don’t see the need. I have lots of friends who say that when they went to pick up their sons at college they couldn’t believe their bed sheets had never been washed.
3. Get a loud alarm clock, put it far enough away from you that you can’t reach it and when it goes off…get up and get to class. Education is expensive and if you don’t go to class you are wasting someone’s money.
4. Don’t forget your raising. That first taste of real freedom can be a heady experience. Be careful about the choices you make. Some mistakes last a lifetime. Don’t forget your raising in a Kentucky way of saying, remember what you were taught.
5. It’s good to have a Plan A but you better have a Plan B and C because life never turns out like you think it will. No one plans to have Parkinson’s Disease, but Michael J. Fox got it anyway. No one plans to have a car wreck and end up in a wheelchair for life, but it happened to Eva Self when she was a teenager. It’s good to have a plan for your life, but trust me, there will be good and bad surprises along the way.
6. Hold on to God’s hand. Then when you hit a bump in the road you will have someone to help pick you back up.
By the way, all of these bits of advice were given to me by my mother which brings me to the final “fortune” of the day, LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!
Giving thanks today to my mother for all her wonderful advice over the years.
