The Mystery of the Missing Mailbox

I have the best job in the world. I babysit my 10 month old granddaughter. Sometimes we are at my house, and other times I go to my daughter’s house  to take care of Baby K. I always take a basket of stuff with me to work on while she is napping. Yesterday was “pay the bills” day. I wrote checks and stuffed  them in envelopes but I only had two stamps. When my daughter came home I asked her if she had some extra stamps I could have. She didn’t have any but she said her husband did and that when he got home she would finish my bills and ask him to put them in the mailbox.

Boring story so far, I know. It gets better.

I left their house (it was night) and backed out of her driveway. I heard a noise and decided I must have tapped the neighbor’s mailbox. I called my daughter and asked her to check it later and let me know if I had scratched it.

Fast forward two hours.

I am home and my cell phone rings. “Mom, Gabe had stamps and we put them on your bills but when he went out to put them in the mailbox he couldn’t find it! You totally knocked it off and into the neighbor’s yard!” She laughs hysterically. “Gabe walked around in the dark with your bills looking for the mailbox. It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen!”

Something tells my my son-in-law was probably not laughing.

For the life of me I just couldn’t understand how I could have totally knocked it over. I was just backing up. I wasn’t going fast and it sure hadn’t sounded like I had hit something hard. I decided to investigate.

This is the mailbox I hit (Gabe fixed it).  In my defense it was pitch black and there were no  reflectors on it, so I couldn’t see it.  It must be made out of something really light weight (plastic maybe?) because there wasn’t a scratch on my vehicle.

They just don’t make mailboxes like they used to, do they? My dad took a heavy metal pole and cemented it in the ground. Thank goodness I didn’t hit a mai mailbox like that!

And it could have been worse, as you can see there is a fire hydrant next to the mailbox. Now that would have made for a really great story!

  1. I laughed about it at the time. Life is too short to be serious. Blessings to you Tammy!

  2. I agree! It was the mailboxes fault! and yes, he is a good SIL and laughed about it. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. The placement of that box, the color and no reflectors? It was asking to be hit! I am going to guess that with free babysitting, your SIL propped the box up without complaining.

  4. Dear Paulette….I miss you too! I have sent you messages on Facebook, called, driven by your old apartment. I think you are a figment of my imagination!

  5. Hi there my new Aussie friend! No, I have to do the mail myself (sigh) but it’s not hard. Blessings to you and come back soon!

  6. Hello Sweet Sara, I may get it again if they don’t put reflectors on it! Take care of yourself and those precious girls!

  7. Haha! So funny how you didn’t even notice! Don’t worry about your son-in-law. I’m sure he’s happy to put his repairman skills to good use 🙂

  8. LOL – in my opinion, they don’t make anything like they used to !!!!! I have to laugh when I say that because as a child I can remember my gran saying that all the time – about everything – cheese never tasted like it used to, the bread never tasted like it used to, things didn’t last like they used to – and I thought to myself, I will never say that. But I do – often – and every time I do, I think of gran and have a chuckle to myself !!!
    Have the best weekend !

  9. The thought of backing into a mailbox crossed my mind the other night when I was backing out of their driveway. I’m sure Gabe is laughing now but wasnt when he was walking around in the dark looking for his.mailbox. Cute story!!

  10. It’s unfortunate that you knocked over the mailbox but I can imagine how hard it would have been to see it in the dark, being black and lacking reflectors! On the bright side it was able to be fixed and your letters were sent and your car was undamaged – plus you got to spend time with your granddaughter – glad that it turned out okay in the end!

  11. Oh dear! I did laugh though *hides head* It was either a plastic letterbox, or your car is built like a brick!

So I’m curious – being an Aussie – Can you put your outgoing mail into your letterbox and the posty will take it for you?

Just read your “about page” and giggled at the Loretta Lynn line. That woman tells it how it is in her music doesn’t she! I grew up listening to her, and learned a few lessons in life before I was even old enough to date! lol

Happy Friday Teresa and thanks for linking up to TIK this week! Looking forward to reading more of your blog 🙂
