Your Job-It’s How You Do It That Matters

Your Job

Think for a minute about the people you know who excel at what they do. Whether they are a dog walker, janitor, teacher, farmer, blogger or executive, the people who stand out are the ones who have a true passion for their job and who treat others with respect. They aren’t the ones who do just enough to get by. They are the ones who go above and beyond what is required.

Even if no one ever says “thank you” they still excel. They try harder, work longer and give more than others in their profession because that’s who they are…exceptional people.

While not every employee knows how to autograph their work with excellence, I do believe that with a good training program and a leader who knows how to lead, employees can be trained to improve their customer service skills and work ethic. Because everyone is different, every employee will achieve different levels of success, but without high expectations from leadership….well, we have all been places where there are NO expectations and most of us don’t go back.

One of the best (if not the best) example of a business who trains their employees with high expectations is Disney. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nobody does customer service like Disney. They are amazing. There’s a good reason why they call it the happiest place on earth. I’ve been there three times in the last three years and the people who work there are attentive, caring and knowledgeable. Most importantly, if they can’t fix something for you or don’t know the answer to your question they will find someone who can.

They make me want to come back again and again!

On the other end of the spectrum, poor customer service and lack of enthusiasm for work has the opposite effect. We used a rental agency for a property last summer and the experience was a nightmare from beginning to end. The house wasn’t as advertised. When I asked for the wi-fi to be repaired and the door knob to be put on the back door (and several other things) they assured me they would take care of it and they did….after more phone calls and a visit to their office.

They made me never want to use their agency again.

Every employee is a representative of that business.

Last night I heard a man speak at a local event and he apologized for coming straight from work to the meeting. He said he hadn’t had time to go home and freshen up and his day had started exceptionally early. He looked fine and I thought no more about it until I realized the logo on his shirt was from a local bank. By the time he finished speaking I wanted to know which bank he worked at so that I could bank there. His talk had nothing to do with money but everything to do with integrity and character. He was the type of person you want to be working with your money at your bank!

Exceptional employees don’t stop being exceptional people the minute they get off work. In fact, often they are vital members of their communities and take part in volunteer organizations and charities. Their enthusiasm and positive attitude carries over into every aspect of their life.

If you have employees who “autograph their work with excellence” you are blessed and I hope you recognize them for their worth and value. Workers like this are like rare gemstones whose sparkle inspires and motivates others. Let them know you appreciate them and do everything in your power to keep them. Your employees make or break your business!
