Smells of Autumn

What comes to mind when you think of Autumn? Maybe you are a visual person and you think of scary ghosts and goblins on Halloween?
Because I am a grandmother now I enjoy those things, but nothing reminds me of past fall seasons more than the smells I associate with it. Of all our senses, did you know the sense of smell is the one we associate most strongly with memory. Close your eyes for a moment and think about fall when you were a child. What smells do you remember best?
Memories
One smell I remember best is the smell of burning leaves in my grandmother’s yard. We would rake them then jump in them and play until we had to rake them again. I wanted to bring some scents of fall into my house but I didn’t want to rake or burn leaves, so I went in search of scents of the season at Kroger’s in Bowling Green, Kentucky and wandered through the aisle until I found the new Glade® Limited Edition Fall Collection fragrances Pumpkin Pit Stop™ and Hit The Road™.
The day could not have been more beautiful. The air was cool and crisp and the sky was filled with white fluffy clouds. I was definitely in the mood for Hit The Road™ and after a drive through the country with leaves skittering across the road I came home and found the perfect place to put my new Glade® Hit The Road™ Jar Candle.
The smell reminded me of long, leisurely drives in the country with my girlfriends. Living in rural Kentucky there are lots of country roads to explore and we loved nothing more than being together, rolling the car windows down and turning the radio up. We would sing along with Willie Nelson at the top of our lungs. On The Road Again was one of our favorite songs and it went perfect with my Hit The Road™ theme so I popped Willie’s DVD in the player and sang with him while remembering my friends and our carefree rides through the countryside.
What are your favorite road trips this time of year? Why not get inspired by Hit The Road and take one now?
Pumpkin Time
Children love decorating pumpkins and there are so many fun ways to decorate them. My son and his girlfriend spray painted some pumpkins silver and then used a black paint to stencil, trace and spray paint the design. Our grandchildren loved them, and it was so easy even I could do it!
First, they got pumpkins. Then Courtney bought a pumpkin painting kit that included stencils, silver and black paint, brushes and clear crackle paint. Next, they put newspapers down in the garage to keep paint from getting on the floor.
They painted the entire pumpkin black and used a hairdryer to make it dry faster. Then they painted a coat of clear crackle paint over it. After that dried they painted over that with the silver paint. Next they taped stencils on the pumpkin and some of the leftover black paint to paint the picture on the pumpkin.
When my children were young my mother would take them to a pumpkin patch and let them choose their own pumpkin to decorate. They loved the experience and I loved the smells! The place where we purchased the pumpkins was an apple orchard and there were always vendors selling pumpkin pies, apple cider and fried apple pies.
Every year our community also holds a pumpkin festival on the town square. Again there are so many food vendors with the delightful smells of fall spices and pumpkin breads and pies that I love to sniff my way around the square!
Glade® Pumpkin Pit Stop™ candle brings all those delightful smells into my home and when you add just a few simple decorations, like a decorative pumpkin or some bright colored leaves, your home has that warm, feel-good atmosphere that makes those childhood memories so special.
