Hula Hoop Queen
Last week during half time of our twin’s ballgame, the principal of the high school (my awesome sister-in-law) hosted a hula hoop contest. Most of the participants were children but a few brave adults participated. There were about 13 contestants, but in case you are wondering I did NOT volunteer and for a very good reason….I am a hula hoop drop out.
A few years ago I decided to try to learn how because it looked like good exercise for the mid-section of your body. I tried and tried some more. Friends tried to help me. Everyone had an opinion.
“Go faster.”
“Go slower.”
“Swing your hips more. No not that much.”
Nothing worked. No matter how hard I tried the hula hoop ended up on the floor. I finally reached the conclusion that hula hooping takes a special talent that I obviously don’t have. But Maggie does….
Maggie is my granddaughter Abby’s best friend and she is the reigning Hula Hoop Queen. Kelly, my sister-in-law, lined the participants up at one end of the gym and they were to race to the other end. Maggie left everyone behind.
Don’t challenge this girl to a hula hoop race unless you want to eat her dust! You rock, Maggie!
Make pictures if you do and we will put them on NanaHood!
I guess we can stand back and watch the two of them hula!
If it is genetic it skips a generation because I can’t hula hoop at all. However, Moma (Maggie’s Nana) has a picture she carries with her of when she was 17 hula hooping. She says it’s her inspiration — She still loves to Hula Hoop. I’m not sure she could run and hula hoop like Maggie

Must be genetic!!! I never, ever could hula-hoop!!! What I can’t understand is how Maggie hardly moves her body at all–yet that hoop spins around at a dizzying rate! Amazing!!!
I did the hula hoop when I was a kid. I was pretty good. The last time I tried, not so good. I think you have to have the body shape of a child. I lost that a long time ago. Reading this makes me want to go find a hula hoop to see if I can do it now. At my age wouldn’t that be something?
It was awesome to see those kids out there doing the hula hoop….I wanted to go, esp. when I heard the music that was being played, but my child would have disowned me! LOL
Hey, I got your link from Thursday Thirteen, but I couldn’t actually find your list of 13 things. I still wanted to comment on this entry, however.
What kind of hoop were you using? Was it an adult sized weighted hoop? Adult hoops move slower and are built for taller, more mature bodies. If you were interested once, perhaps you should try it again with a larger hoop and give yourself two or three weeks before you put it back down. Try Hooping Harmony. If you’re in a city that has a hoop shop, go in and they can help you pick out the hoop that works best.
Good luck!
Happy TT,
