Children’s Books My Grandchildren Love (and one I just ordered)

Children’s Books

I loved reading to my children when they were little and some of the books I shared with them I now enjoy reading to my grandchildren. It doesn’t matter how many times I read them, I still enjoy them.

A few weeks ago I got an email from a girl who lives and works in England. She wanted to know what my favorite children’s book was because she was writing an article about grandparent’s favorite books to read to their grandchildren. You can read her article here. It was nice to be quoted from someone across the pond and I got some great ideas for books for my grandchildren.

Her article made me think about my favorite children’s books and I decided to share them with you just in case you have never read them.

My first choice is Hunting the White Cow by Tres Seymour. It’s the delightful story of a little girl and her father and grandfather. They live on a farm and the white cow is constantly escaping the pasture. My dad and grandfather were constantly chasing cows who jumped fences and I remember going with them occasionally. Even if your grandchildren don’t live on a farm they will still love the adventures of this farm family and the white cow.

Another great children’s book is one all littles love, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Children love to watch the caterpillar eat and grow and grow. It’s a fun read especially if your grands are very young.

When my oldest granddaughter was first learning to read I ordered her some books written by Tedd Arnold. Her favorite by far was Fly High, Fly Guy!

The book is funny, has great illustrations and the words are simple enough that young readers don’t struggle and feel success.

There are tons of Fly Guy books and all of them are cute. My granddaughter also loved Hi, Fly Guy, which actually is the first Fly Guy book if you want to read them in order. They are simple enough they can be read out of order too. It’s not like a series, just a bunch of very funny books about a fly.

I read about How to Babysit a Grandma online and feel sure it will become a new favorite as soon as it arrives. I love the idea of someone babysitting grandma and feel sure my grands will find it funny. I can’t wait to read it to them! And if they do love it then I’ll order How to Babysit a Grandpa (which I’m sure is harder…lol)

And my final recommendation (for today…I’m going to share my favorite books for older kids at a later date) Is I’ll Love You Forever. This is listed as a children’s book but truthfully, I think it’s really for adults. If you haven’t ever read it grab a box of tissues and read it to yourself before you share it with a child. It pulls on your heart strings until it practically yanks your heart right out of your chest! I promise it’s an amazing book no mom or nana should be without.

Have you read any of these books? Are they favorites at your house? If not, what children’s books to your kids and grandchildren love?
