How Many Friends Do You Have?

According to my Facebook page I have 927 friends.  Don’t tell anybody but I don’t have a clue who some of the people I have friended (is that a word?) are.  If someone asks me to friend them, I usually do, even if I don’t know them. Why? Because I don’t put anything personal on my page. I keep it clean and do my best to follow my grandmother’s rule. The one that goes, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Are all 927 of my Facebook friends, really my friends? Nope, but some of them are.

We tend to toss the word “friends” around as easily as we do the word “love.”  Just as there is a big difference in the way I “love” Kelly’s homemade brownies and the way I “love” Kelly, there’s a big difference in Facebook friends and real friends.

A long time ago I remember someone told me that if you can find one or two close friends in your life time, you have been blessed. I agree, but I’ve been blessed to have more than one or two (although not 927).

I read an article about a man who believes 150 people is the magic number when it comes to communities and friends.

According to the Mr. Dunbar (the man quoted in the article) While modern society does make it hard to hang on to friends who aren’t geographically close, Dunbar says, his research shows family is different.

“Friends, if you don’t see them, will gradually cease to be interested in you,” he says. “Family relationships seem to be very stable. No matter how far away you go, they love you when you come back.”

I understand what he means, but if you choose your friends wisely, they will love you when you come back too.

I am so blessed. Thank you, Lord for the blessing of friends!

John 15:13

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

  1. That is a lot of friends! I have quite a few but not that many. I’ve noticed several of my friends posting about reducing their friend lists, so evidently a lot of people feel that their numbers are out of control. If your page is filled with people that you feel only tepid about, it’s easy to miss a post from someone you really care about.
