A Trip To Kentucky Down Under With The Grandchildren
A trip to Kentucky Down Under
Maybe it wasn’t the best day for an outside adventure weather wise (high 90’s with high humidity) but we went to Kentucky Down Under anyway. There were 7 of us. My son and his three girls (Abby’s 15 so she was such a big help) and then we took my daughter’s 3 littles with us.
This wasn’t my first trip to Kentucky Down Under. Years ago we went with a church group in the middle of the summer. I still remember how tired the little ones got (and truthfully me too). There’s one big hill to climb and lots of walking. This time I vowed to do things differently. Nana rented golf carts.
My littlest granddaughter liked to pretend she was driving. This was actually at the end of the day and you can see how hot it was, too hot to carry her all around the park! Yes, it was expensive but worth it in my opinion. I made up for the cost by feeding them before we got inside the park and I told them absolutely no souvenirs, so I spent what I saved on on golf carts.
The first species we came to on our journey was birds. We saw Cocakatoos, Parakeets, Owls and many more!
“How does he turn his neck so far around?” they wanted to know. According to National Geographic they can actually turn their heads 270 degrees, which is pretty impressive. Love the smile on my grandson’s face!
Equally impressive was the lack of fear my grandchildren had when they stepped inside the bird cage to feed the birds. Look closely and you will see that one granddaughter has a bird on her head and two on her arm.
This granddaughter preferred the birds at a distance. She left the food in the cup and scooted it toward the bird.
There was lots more to see and do and if you haven’t been I highly recommend a trip very soon!
My grandchildren were fascinated with the Lemur because he protects himself with a stink….which led to a conversation about passing gas….which led to…..well, you get the general idea.
Be sure and take sunscreen, caps and a squirt bottle of water if it’s hot on the day you go. This little one’s mom sprayed her with sunscreen and put a mosquito bracelet on her ankle before we left home.
This is a Caiman from South America named Chomper. Yes, his mouth is taped shut and yes he once bit a plug out of someone’s finger. My granddaughter thought he was cute. Cute????? I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
We came home tired, stinky and very thirsty. (Note to self-I should have packed water bottles…it was so hot I caved on the “no snacks rule” a bit and bought them snow cones). There are bathrooms in the park but I strongly suggest you make everyone go before you get there.
What sort of adventures are you having with your grands this summer? I’d love to hear from you!
