Reflections From The Kitchen Sink On Spring
I don’t know about you, but I love the sounds of spring and get truly excited when winter is on its last leg. My late husband reminded me often I was jumping the gun on converting our home from winter to spring. I would want to plant flowers the minute I heard the first bird chirp or saw a squirrel in full recreation mode on my back porch. I am not one who is spontaneous 99.9% of the time, but spring gets me pretty feisty.
Part one of the spring frenzy is the return of color. I will never forget when I was graduated from a small black and white tv to a color on for my bedroom. It was about the same sensation I had when I got my first pair of glasses and in a quick second when from fuzzy to clear vision. There weren’t any horn blowers to announce the royal upgrade, but it was a big deal. The spring palette changeover brings a similar enthusiasm.
I have struggled with depression for the greater part of my life. I never talked about it much, but the winter in my neck of the woods gets me. The colors are drab. The trees are bare. The wildlife isn’t as present. Thankfully, there are times when the beauty of God’s handiwork sneaks through. Puffy, wet snowflakes. Ice-wrapped tree limbs. An occasional cardinal on a window facing. Winter’s chill, though, is hard to maneuver often, hence, the strong longing for spring’s arrival.
Part two of the spring fling energy comes with the longer days. Earth has a different placement and the time change stretch the daylight hours and encourage more life from all of God’s creations. It truly is a beautiful thing if we slow ourselves down to appreciate the show.
A common theme in my writings is the speed of our existence and the need to slow our pace and find the simple joys in our lives. The upcoming season nudges us to get outside and do just that.
I suppose I will heed my sweet guy’s warning and hold off on planting the violas and marigolds for a bit, but as soon as there is any semblance of a green thumb alert, I will be out the door!

Until then, I will be looking at fun porch decor and dreaming of my morning coffee times on the back porch.
Until next time….

Spring is wonderful! Except for allergies! Ahhh-choo!
I soooo identify with this… and I can’t wait for my beautiful blue Salvia to peek through the mulch! It’s the soft, fragrant herb type, not the tough, spikey one, and it also comes in white, tho it usually doesn’t overwinter well. If you haven’t tried it, give it a go….so perfect in any summer bouquet!!!
Aww thank you so much for the kind words about the blog. I love sitting on my back porch drinking coffee too! Take care my Tennessee friend and do come back and visit!
I’m in northwestern Tennessee and our winters are drab too. We do have quiet a bit of wildlife though. So ready for spring. Love to drink my coffee on my back porch too. Hoping this week isnt just teasing us. Love your blog! God Bless!
