Newseum in Washington D. C. is a Must Visit! -

Newseum

I had never heard of the Newseum until a good friend told me to be sure and check it out. She was right! It is a must see if you go to Washington D. C.

If you are not familiar with the Newseum this is part of the description on the website.

“The mission of the Newseum, located in Washington, D.C., is to increase public understanding of the importance of a free press and the First Amendment. Visitors experience the story of news, the role of a free press in major events in history, and how the core freedoms of the First Amendment — religion, speech, press, assembly and petition — apply to their lives.

Considered one of the most interactive museums in the world, the Newseum has seven levels with 15 galleries and 15 theaters. Exhibits include the 9/11 Gallery Sponsored by Comcast, which displays the broadcast antennae from the top of the World Trade Center; the Berlin Wall Gallery, whose eight concrete sections are one of the largest displays of the original wall outside Germany; and the Pulitzer Prize Photographs Gallery, which features photographs from every Pulitzer Prize–winning entry dating back to 1942.” Newseum

Located on Pennsylvania Avenue it’s easy to locate. Finding a parking place is harder than finding the Newseum, but it’s worth it.

This is what the front of the building looks like. What a great reminder of our freedom and that’s just on the outside of the building! There are so many pictures, documents and exhibits inside the building that you will come away feeling so much more knowledgeable about the history of the news than you did when you went inside!

There was so much to see that we spent several hours and could have probably stayed the whole day. Even if you are not a history buff you will still find this museum fascinating. There were school groups there and kids of all ages were enjoying the photographs and exhibits.

Some of the exhibits we saw included: The Civil Rights Movement: 1968 50 Years, 9/11 Gallery and The Berlin Wall.

This is a part of the Berlin Wall you are allowed to touch. Unfortunately I don’t pay attention to signs and the huge section of the wall that you are NOT supposed to touch, I did. My son’s girlfriend snapped a picture of me with a sign behind me that says Do Not Touch. I’m not going to show you that picture because I’m so embarrassed I disobeyed (and got caught).

There were photographs out on a deck on one of the floors. Here my husband, son and son’s girlfriend are looking at them. Actually the son’s girlfriend, Jessi, is looking at my son in this photo but she had been looking at the display. If you look to the left of the building there’s a pretty famous building just down the road.

One of my favorite exhibits were all the Pulitzer Prize winning photographs. It was like taking a walk back in time. Most of them I remembered, but some I did not.I can’t begin to tell you about all the wonderful things in the museum but you can check them out on their website and be sure to put the Newseum on your bucket list.
