Ninja Red Riding Hood-Book Review

Many years ago one of my sons decided he wanted to be a Ninja Turtle. He and his cousin were big fans of a movie that was out called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The two of them would run around the house and backyard doing chopping motions with their arms and what they imagined to be Karate kicks with their legs, while shouting, “Hiiii-yaaa!”  Occasionally they would mask themselves by wearing their underwear on their heads and peeking through the leg holes. They were cute, but not very dangerous.

When I was asked to review Corey Rosen Shwartz new book, Ninja Red Riding Hood, my mind went back to my son and his cousin. Children find Ninjas  very appealing, so of course I wanted to review the book.

The book arrived in the mail this week and I have to tell you, it was love at first sight.

Ninja Red Riding Hood is a delightful children’s book that any Nana or Poppa would love to read with their grandchildren.

Wolf just can’t catch a break! Ever since the three little pigs started teaching everyone Ninja skills, huffing and puffing just hasn’t been enough to scare up a good meal.

His craving for meat sends Wolf to classes at the dojo, and soon he’s ready to try out his new moves. A little girl and her tiny granny should be easy targets—right?

Not if Little Red has anything to say about it! Kiya!

The Illustrator is Dan Santat and his art work is awesome. Santat is the creator of the Disney Channel’s animated hit The Replacements and also holds a black belt in Shotoken.

I love books that rhyme, as long as they aren’t too corny, and this one isn’t. It’s cute, fast-paced and sure to keep your grandchild’s attention all the way to the end of the book.

Another plus to this book is that Red Riding Hood and Granny are not the passive wimps they were in the original fairy tale. We’ve come a long way baby, and so has Little Red Riding Hood and her Granny!

I hate to admit it but the whole time I was reviewing this book I was humming the old and irritating song “Li’l Red Riding Hood” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Any of you old enough to remember it? Just in case you missed that delightful ditty you might want to look up the lyrics for a good laugh. “You’re everything that a big bad wolf could want….” Whew, what were they thinking?

Anyway, the book is great and you should definitely buy it for your child or grandchild.  They will love it and so will you!
