This Mommy Blogs in Australia

NanaHood invites mommy and nana bloggers from other countries to take part in our “Bloggers From Around The World” series.

Please welcome Bree from Australia!

My name is Bree and I am the author of the blog Twinkle in the Eye. I blog from Australia about life, motherhood and the passions that make life worthwhile. I also like to share the stories of other mothers, particularly those whose journey takes them on an uncommon path or presents hurdles to be overcome.

I live in a small village with 734 residents, outside the regional town where I grew up on the east coast of Australia. It is located 300 kilometres or approximately 150 miles north of Sydney. My husband and I built out first home here almost two years ago, and we moved in one month before having our first baby, a little boy who is to all intents and purposes a little ray of sunshine! Our home is located approximately 10 minutes drive from each of our families, so we’re well supported and our little boy has 13 cousins ranging from 3 to 13 to play with, he never wants for a friend.

I started blogging when I was on maternity leave. I had not actually heard of a ‘blog’ prior to this, it was a whole new world to discover. I found it to be a creative outlet and something to keep me stimulated while out of the workforce, I dove in head first and before I knew it I was speaking a new language, using terms like ‘coding’, ‘widget’, ‘meta-tag’ and ‘SEO’. I also discovered it was something that could give me a minor income, something I thought would be beneficial during my baby making years when work would be on or off or reduced to part-time.

It has been an enjoyable process, I have made wonderful connections and friends throughout Australia and abroad. The blog ebbs and flows, at times I’m inspired and overflowing with ideas and other times I struggle, particularly when life gets in the way, but for the most part I am consistent and committed to my blog. It is my outlet, my community and more and more becoming a fundamental part of how I express myself.

About half of my blog traffic comes from the US which is an indication of how well developed the blogosphere is in the States. It is only in recent times that the Australian blogging community has burgeoned and found its identity and it is an exciting time to be involved. Australian bloggers are a supportive and interrelated community who are happy to share their skills and knowledge in a variety of ways.

Is there a difference between Aussie bloggers and US bloggers? Maybe, I think I have observed more similarity than difference, in saying that, I am astonished by the number of ways you manage to integrate pumpkin into your Thanksgiving meals and peanut butter seems to play a very large role in the US diet – just ask Pinterest! Oh, we also spell Mom with a ‘u’ just like the British, we call ourselves Mummy Bloggers.
