Kentucky Sorghum Festival

Unless you are from the south you may not even know what sorghum is, and that’s a shame. Growing up in southern Kentucky I was raised on sorghum and biscuits (and lots of other things too). First you put some butter in the middle of your plate, then you pour sorghum over it, mash it all up and put it on a biscuit. Believe it or not it tastes wonderful.

Small Community Festivals

In the rural south we celebrate with festivals; everything from pumpkins to sorghum. This weekend we attended the Sorghum Festival.

Even though it was hotter than blazes everyone had a great time. There was lots to do and see and I ran into a lot of folks I hadn’t seen in a long time, like my sweet cousin Sarah and her precious granddaughter.

There is always barbecue available at festivals and it was about lunch time so we went in search of food. barbecue at festival

This guy was serving drinks and food while juggling a granddaughter on his hip. Now that takes talent! FYI-the barbecue was great!

There were also lots of vendors there. This was one of my favorite booths. I stopped by for a free smell and managed NOT to purchase anything, even though I wanted to. It smelled divine!

I also made a point of finding the building where they were actually making the barbecue. It was unbelievably hot in there. I talked to the guys who were working about the process and the heat. Here’s a video clip of them making sorghum.

  1. I’ve heard of sorghum but I don’t know what it is, Teresa. My husband’s from Knoxville and his parents still live there, so I’m in the South a lot. I’ll have to try it the next time I’m there. Thanks for the linkup!
