Beautiful Hands

Beautiful Hands This is a true story about something that happened many decades ago. In 1989 my mother was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. My brother (my only sibling) and I made many trips back and forth to various hospitals. One day I was driving and he told me a story about beautiful hands, one that I’ve never forgotten. He said that one Sunday when he was a little boy he was sitting at church beside mom and she took his hand in hers and was looking at it.

“You have beautiful hands,” she said.

He looked at his hands, grubby and small beside her long lovely fingers with her manicured nails.

“I do not have beautiful hands,” he said.

“Oh, yes you do,” she said firmly.

“The things these hands can do are beautiful.” Mom died in July of 1990 but I have thought about her words many times. I shared this story with my friend and she surprised me by giving me a book. beautiful hands

I loved the book but I loved my friend more for remembering. Look what she put inside the book.

Today I was holding one of my granddaughters in my lap and her hand was on top of mine. Immediately I thought about mom and the book my friend had given me. My mom’s hands did so many beautiful things and her faith kept her strong through life and even through her sickness. She touched so many lives and her hands were a blessing to so many, especially me and my brother.

How I loved her beautiful hands!beautiful hands

  1. I have this picture of my first born who shall be “50” this July, 2019 that when she was a baby I outlined her hand & her foot on a piece of notebook paper & I still have it today. It’s the most important piece of paper I own & I look at it often & then I’ll look at her picture now & ~sigh~!!!

  7. A beautiful tribute to your mother and she sounds very much like mine. My mother passed away 32 years ago from cancer but she battled right to the end without complaint. I love the story and I have a similar photo with my grandson. It is lovely to connect with you through The Women of Midlife and I’ve linked up.
