FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project for Halloween
Have you heard about the Teal Pumpkin Project?
The “FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project helps make sure all children will come home on Halloween night with something they can enjoy. It just takes one simple act: offering non-food treats… an alternative to candy. Last year, households from all 50 states and 14 countries participated. This is a worldwide movement to create a safer, happier Halloween for all trick-or-treaters.” (FARE website)
As a mother of food-allergy kiddos, I love that this exists! The holidays, and ESPECIALLY Halloween, can be rough for kids with food allergies, and this kind of community support helps so much. It’s very nerve wracking to participate in trick-or-treating, and we have a lot of rules to minimize the risk for our daughter (and now food allergic son!) Seeing porches with teal pumpkins makes our night a lot less stressful!
How to Join in the Teal Pumpkin Project
It’s really, really simple to be involved.
– You can offer non-food treats for trick-or-treaters.
– You can decorate a teal pumpkin to display on your porch or in front of your home to show kids and families that you have non-food treats.
– You can even download a sign from FARE so people who haven’t heard about the project know WHY you have a TEAL pumpkin!
What You Can Give Instead of Candy
Are you not sure about kind of treats to give out? How about pencils/notepads, glowsticks, slinkies, bouncy balls? Check HERE for a great list of ideas.
We will be decorating our pumpkins in teal this year, and we are loving the fun ways shown in this post on the Joann’s website. What about you? Will you join in?
