Teacher Appreciation Week + Mother’s Day = My Mom
Shirley DeMumbrum Bell was my first and most important teacher. She was also my mom and my best friend.
Today’s post is dedicated to teachers and to her.
My Mom
She was only sixteen years old when she eloped.
I was born a year later.
She was a teacher at the local elementary school for 17 years.
She loved to read and travel.
She was only 50 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer.
Her faith never waivered.
She died in July of 1990 at the age of 51 and I miss her still.
Every Mother’s Day there’s an ache in my heart.
This week is Teacher Appreciation week and this weekend is Mother’s Day.
Hug your mom and thank a teacher.
And if your mom happens to be a teacher, well then you have two reasons to appreciate her this week!
What a beautiful post dedicated to your mom! She sounded like a wonderful lady!
I have told you numerous times how thankful I am that at least one of my sons had your mom for a teacher. She was awesome! Thought you would like to hear this story: This week one of the students in our Senior Celebrity Program came by the Chamber Office with her mom to see the photos on the wall of this year’s Celebrities. Her mom was talking about the recent banquet and wishing MCHS had something like that when she was in high school so that she could have honored her favorite teacher: Shirley Bell! She said she was wonderful. I told her about my son reading all those books so he could go to the party at your house at the end of the year. She said she did the same thing! Sure wish we had more teachers like Shirley Bell!
What a beautiful entry. Thanks for sharing!
