National Whatever Day

Whatever day it is today, you can bet it’s a day to celebrate something!

My 9 year old daughter is a planner.. and a “special memories” kind of girl, so it’s no surprise that she loves “National Day”. If you weren’t aware, there are several special occasions that you can celebrate every day! For example, today is National Pecan Cookie Day! We can’t have pecan cookies because of food allergies, but they sure do look good.

Today isn’t the best example, since the National Day calendar we browse only has ONE item listed for today. Most of the days of the month have three or four, at least. Tomorrow has NINE special occasions, like “white chocolate day”, and “elephant appreciation day”, and “dear diary” day.  It also happens to be September 22nd, which means it’s the first day of Fall. (YAY!!)

Now, we don’t celebrate ALL the special occasions, every day, but Martha makes sure we celebrate at least one of them a few times a week. We homeschool, so one of her journaling activities is to select fun (and often silly) National Days for each day of every week.

National Cheeseburger Day? You Gotta Be Kidding Me!

Last week, we celebrated National Double Cheeseburger Day… and a few days later National Cheeseburger Day. (Not sure why either of those needed a day, but it made menu planning easy for those days!) It’s also been a very educational practice – Martha now knows what a Hoagie is, what Linguine is and what “Ants on a Log” is, thanks to the National Days from last week.

I’m never quite as excited to celebrate these National Days as Martha is, but I have to admit we’ve made some fun memories and had lots of laughs because of them. (National Ampersand Day, anyone??)

How do YOU make special memories with your kids/grandkids?
