Bulldozers, baking and basketball
Yesterday we had a bulldozer ready to doze down an old house on the farm. I had called the electrical company a few days before to get the power turned off, but it was still on. The power people came, turned off the electricity, the dozer pushed on the house and nothing happened. That’s right, nothing happened. My son and the bulldozer operater decided to peel off some of the exterior of the house when they did what they saw shocked them (and me as well!)
The house didn’t move because it was a lob cabin made from what must have been massive trees. We knew the logs had to be very old because my dad bought the farm in the 1960’s and the house had white siding on it then, but we didn’t know how old they could be so we called Miss Kay. Miss Kay is the lady you call when you want to know something about Kentucky history. She was a history teacher and has sponsored the Junior Historical Society for years. Miss Kay agreed to come look at the logs and give us her opinion.
She walked around the cabin, looked at the logs and told us what she thought. The cabin was probably built somewhere prior to the Civil War. Most of the chinking between the logs was crumbling but the logs were in excellent condition. The weather boarding on the outside of them has hidden them from view for so long that even Miss Kay didn’t know there was a cabin beneath the siding. My son has always wanted a log cabin and he was absolutely thrilled to find out that we own one. He was also thrilled that the bulldozer couldn’t move it and they hadn’t torn it down.
Earlier in the week I had promovied Abby that when she came back this weekend we would make either cookies or pumpkin bread. When we picked her up on Friday the first thing she asked me was when are we cooking pumpkin bread and cookies (somehow the “or” was left out). So after our log cabin adventure we went to the grocery and Nana and Abby and Aunt Ray Ray did some cooking in the kitchen.
After we baked the cookies we put some on a platter and let Abby pass them around. She was so proud of her cookies…and then she dropped the platter! Oh well, there were more left on the cookie sheet.
After everyone loaded up on cookies and milk we went outside for a basketball game. It was a little hard for the guys to play because no matter what we are doing Abby wants to be the center of attention.
It was a great weekend. The weather was beautiful. My children were all home and Abby was here. We discovered a log cabin and this morning we went to church and gave thanks for blessings too numerous to count. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
