All About Squishies – Tween Talk Episode 1

Have you heard of Squishies? If you have a child or grandchild between the ages of 6 and 12, it’s likely that you have!

We are introducing a new series of fun posts featuring 10 year old Martha from PickleSnickelfritz.com. Martha uploads videos to YouTube and her website, and she likes to talk about toys, dolls, dancing, movies, music, shopping, fashion, baking… and so much more! She will be sharing with the Nanahood readers fun things to know about Tweens in her weekly videos called “Tween Talk”. On Fridays, she’ll be talking about all things “Fashion”.

Squishies Video Re-cap

So.. as a recap, squishies are fun foam figures that you.. squish! The best squishies are “slow-rising”, which means when you squish them, they don’t bounce back into their original form very quickly. The slower the rise.. the better!

Squishies come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Popular themes are food (with faces) and animals (also with cute faces). They may or may not have scents, and USUALLY the scents are good. Sometimes a squishy will come with an awful smell.

Squishies are generally made overseas, and so ordering them means purchasing from third party sellers on Amazon.com or on sites like www.banggood.com which was mentioned in the video. Because they usually come from China, it can take 2-4 weeks for them to arrive. It is always a bit of a gamble ordering, because you never know which color option you might get, or if your squishy will actually look like the one pictured. We call it “surprise box” shopping!

Brands

Popular squishy brands are Puni Maru and Sanqui Elan and Rilikuma. We are lucky to have a store called Tokyo World that carries them in our town, so we can check there regularly for new squishies. Other stores that might carry them are Michaels and Hobby Lobby, but it’s hit and miss finding them. You can find homemade squishies on Etsy and you can even make your own! (That might just be another Tween Talk video eventually!)

Quality

The quality varies a LOT, and it’s almost a guarantee that in any order, you’ll get a squishy or two that are “defective” in some way. Sometimes the foam is split, or pieces can be missing. It’s a pretty normal aspect of the squishy world, but it doesn’t stop the kids from wanting them or buying them!
