The Blessing of Water

Today I’m blogging about a very simple subject, but something we all take for granted. Water.

I often heard my grandmother say,  “You never miss water until the well runs dry.” As usual she was right.  I take the blessing of water too lightly.

About a week ago I posted about a little girl named Rachel and her fight to secure clean water for developing countries. You can read Rachel’s story here.

Rachel’s story got my attention and I’ve been thinking about water ever since.

Just this week I was reminded of a time when there was too much water in the world.

God said that won’t happen again and I believe Him. I know He keeps His promises.

A Little Boy in Ethiopia

Three days ago, a town here in eastern Ethiopia boasted a pond full of water. Yesterday it had shrunk to a shallow puddle – and yet I saw a little boy scoop up a cupful of muddy sludge from the puddle and drink greedily.

This boy, believe it or not, is one of the lucky ones. Because there are millions of people in this country who can’t find a drop of water – even dirty water.

Sunday morning in church I sat behind a mother and her little boy.  During the service he became thirsty and she took a bottle of water from her purse. He turned it up and drank half of it, handed her bottle back and smiled.

I got chills thinking about a mother in Ethiopia watching her child drink from a muddy puddle.

Beyond My Comprehension

This year, the rains didn’t come to Ethiopia.

Without water, crops withered.  No rain. No Crops. No Food.

Have you ever really thought about what happens when someone skips a meal – or two meals – every day, for months on end? When people go hungry, their bodies slow down – way down. Eventually, their brains shut down, too. It’s nothing that a child should experience and I can’t help myself…I wonder why.

I know God is in Heaven and I know He sees the suffering so the minute I wonder why….I know the answer.

Because those of us who have enough aren’t sharing enough with those who don’t.

Yes, I have tons of bills.  Yes, I have twins going to college whose tuition is due. But I have something the people in Ethiopia don’t.

Water. And because I do I have to find a way to share.

Won’t you?

  1. I distantly rued the lack of access to water before I was a mom; now that I have my son, I look at him sometimes and think how horrible it must feel to not be able to grant your child the water he needs to survive. Tomorrow my first guest blog in a series called “for this i am thankful” goes up. It’s my hope that one of those entries will touch on water. If not, it’s something I’ll likely write about myself. I am so grateful for that access, and so saddened that it’s not access (nearly) everyone benefits from.
