When It’s a Good Idea To Beg
It isn’t necessarily a bad idea to beg. Especially when you are as smart as my Aunt’s granddaughter, Emeline. Emeline is about ten years old (I apologize Emeline if this isn’t correct). Her Mamba (nana) Kate, who happens to be my aunt offered to take her grands (Jane, Kate, Grady and Emeline) to New York. My aunt and one of her daughter’s (Leah, not Emeline’s mom) would be the chaperons. The plans were in full swing until Emeline’s dad, Robert, heard about the plan and nearly had cardiac arrest. “What, my children in New York? Don’t think so!”
So, Emeline put her exceptional mind to work and what follows is the power point she created for her dad. You won’t believe that someone so young can come up with such detailed rationale. She’s funny. She’s smart and if I was her dad…well, I’d have to let her go. Watch the video and tell me what you think!
Great power point, Emeline! I hope your Dad takes it to heart and does not deprive you of this wonderful opporunity. I grew up in rural northern NJ, about 45 minutes from NYC, and always loved going into the city. I moved away from NJ when my husband was in the Air Force as a career but am glad to be back in NJ. Now I can again enjoy NYC and share it with my grandkids.
I took one grandson to the Titantic exhibit as he was very interested in the story of the Titantic and we had lunch at Carmine’s. We had a great time. He now wants to see the Pompeii exhibit so we are going to do that very soon. I will be taking my granddaughter to the American Girl store this fall.
Broadway shows are a favorite of mine and I am always glad to see a new one or an old favorite again. The Lion King is a wonderful show and one you will certainly enjoy. My grandson loved it and had dinner at Junior’s that time . The waiter was the most knowledgeable on what was gluten and dairy free on the menu of any waiter he ever encountered.
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are wonderful sites to see and you will appreciate much more the history of immigration. You might also like the Pompeii exhibit, which I believe is open until October. One thing that is definite, though, is that there is so much to see and do in the city that you will certainly have to come back.
Good luck! I hope you are able to convince your Dad to let you go. I know you will have an educational and wonderful time. The city is now cleaner and safer than it was years ago. I love it and I am sure you will, too.
thank all of you commentors! we really appreciate your advice! yes, robert seems to have caved….as a matter of fact, he says he can’t go any place in town (chattanooga) without someone giving him a hard time about the powerpoint presentation.! he is preparing a rebuttal, but in the meantime, the trip is on!
mamba
What a nice job you’ve done Emeline! You’ve collected your facts, presented your arguments, and I think made a very convincing case. I do hope you’re able to convince your dad to let you go. I grew up in NJ, about 45 minutes outside of NYC. While the area where I lived was rather rural, and I am definitely not a city-girl, NYC is a wonderful place that everyone should experience in their lifetime – and it sounds like your Mamba has a wonderful trip planned. Overall, the city is safe. You just have to be smart – and I can tell that you are – and stay in the more touristy areas of the city – which it looks like you will be doing. Most of the horror stories your dad has probably heard about NYC don’t happen in those areas. Overall, if you consider the number of people that visit NYC each summer, it’s actually relatively safe – as is flying, as you so nicely pointed out.
I saw Lion King on Broadway last spring with my 10yo son. We both loved it! It is one of the best shows I have ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a few. The AG store is supposed to be incredible – my boys haven’t let me drag them in there yet – and the toy stores are fun, even for adults. Don’t forget the Disney Store in/near Times Square – it’s really fun to look around in, too. The Bronx Zoo is a fun outing, and no one can beat NYC pizza. The smaller the store, the better the pizza!
I do hope you get to go on your trip and that perhaps you’ll share a few photos here when you return! Come on, Dad. There are no guaranteed safe places on this earth, but a smart-cautious girl in NYC with competent, vigilant adults will likely be fine!
This child is brilliant! I am still laughing at the Cash Cab comment and not feeding pigeons or hobos. She has got to be from the south to call them hobos. LOL
Brillant! So is her dad letting her go to NYC? I hope so after that presentation…:)
Well, here’s what I think …I think she should go as well and mostly certainly she will need to bring a LARGE bank account because the precious things on her list are not cheep (I know, I recently spent several weeks in NYC …I was broke for weeks LOL!). But, what are daddies for anyway?!
What a neat experience! I’ll be waiting to read the Part 2 of this story!
