What Do You Know About Type 1 Diabetes?

Last week I received a phone call from a friend asking me if I would tell you something. When I heard what she wanted me to share with you I immediately said yes.

National Diabetes Awareness Month

There’s Nothing Juvenile About Type 1 Diabetes…

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, with World Diabetes Day on Saturday, November 14.

The lady who called me has a beautiful daughter named Hannah who has Type 1 diabetes.  A few years ago I had the privilege of having Hannah in class. She was a joy to get to know and I’m more than glad to help raise awareness for such a worthy cause.

Did you know…

That Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, an organ about the size of a hand that is located behind the lower part of the stomach.

Did you know…

That people with type 1 diabetes must take insulin in order to stay alive. This means undergoing multiple injections daily, or having insulin delivered through an insulin pump, and testing their blood sugar by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times a day. People with diabetes must also carefully balance their food intake and their exercise to regulate their blood sugar levels, in an attempt to avoid hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can be life threatening.

Did you know….

Type 1 diabetes is generally diagnosed in children, teenagers, or young adults. Scientists do not yet know exactly what causes type 1 diabetes, but they believe that autoimmune genetic, and environmental factors are involved.

If you know someone with Type 1 diabetes you might want to tell them about this page on Facebook

Later this week we will hear Hannah’s Story….Can’t wait for you to meet her!

One more thing before you go…

Check out the children’s books we are giving away!

As always, thank you for your comments. Diabetes is not good and I’m so sorry you have two family members with it, but glad the three boys don’t! Blessings to you!

I would love to win the books! I followed on google read and I liked your facebook page. I don’t tweet so I applied to receive it by e mail.

I have two family members with type 1. My son married a girl with type 1. She has had it since she was 8 years old. Sadly, my son, her husband, got it when he was 25! No history of it in our family. They have had three beautiful healthy little boys.

You are right, it is worse. None of it is good, though. Blessings to you and your family and I will pray with you that there is a cure soon!

Diabetes runs very high in my family – my mom and sister currently have it and I’m pretty sure I will in a few years if not sooner.. Juvenile is so much worse – have a few friends that have suffered their entire lives – from blindness – to frequent visits to the hospital to kidney failure… Such an awful disease – I pray there is a cure soon…
