The Grandchildren Go Fishing at the Pond

Go Fishing

My Grandpa Layne loved to go fishing. I don’t have many pictures of him but when I remember him he was always wearing a hat, a worn, frayed Fedora. He had wire rimmed glasses and chain smoked one cigarette after another. My mother described him as a “very nervous person.” I didn’t know what nervous meant so I assumed it had something to do with his smoking. I suppose in a way it did. Anyway, the only thing I ever saw him do for fun was go fishing. I think it relaxed him.

The farm where we grow blueberries once belonged to my Grandpa and Grandma Layne. This weekend 3 of my grandchildren went fishing there at the pond. They are too young to appreciate that they are the 5th generation of our family to farm, fish, or just walk on the land. One day I hope they come to love it as much as I do.

When my great-grandparents owned the farm there were over 400 acres there. Now we own about 50 acres. This summer we are opening an agri-tourism business there. How I wish my parents and grandparents could be here for the Grand Opening. Even though they will only be with me in spirit, I know it would make them happy.

The fish went back in the pond with his friends and the kids had a great time. I think they would go fishing every day if they could. If you’d like to follow along with the growth of our agri-tourism business you can Like and Follow us at Bellview Family Farms on Facebook.

I hate to admit it but I don’t like fishing. I love being at the pond and watching the grandchildren have fun but I don’t like worms, fish or sitting still for long periods of time. I understand why my grandfather liked it but I think I’ll leave the fishing to the grandchildren and I’ll just sit on the cabin’s porch swing and watch.

How about you? Do you like to go fishing?

  1. My father was an avid fisherman from childhood. I often went along with him to play on the shore or just spend time with him. I like your idea of catch, observe for a while and then return to the pond. Your grandkids looked like they enjoyed it!
