The Florida Keys

In 1979 I went camping with some girlfriends in the Florida Keys. None of us had ever been camping before and we didn’t even know how to put up a tent. Fortunately, we camped next to a group of guys from Michigan and they helped us. I taught one of them to play Backgammon. His name was Bill and on the day they left to drive back home he and I walked to a dock and it was there that he kissed me (for the first time) and told me goodbye. I went back to our campsite and told my friend Debbie that I had met the man I was going to marry. She looked at me, rolled her eyes and said, “You are crazy!”

Bill and I got engaged the Christmas after we met and married in the summer of 1980. This past week we returned to the Keys for the first time since we met. We returned to the dock, not really expecting it to be there and this is what we found.

The dock was still standing! Notice the yellow tape…it’s not in great shape and they wouldn’t let us walk on it but it was still there!

A lady was walking her dogs and I asked her to make our picture. This was taken at the campground where we met.

I made Bill stand beneath this sign because I told him not only was he the “Catch of the Day” he was the love of my life! By the way, I didn’t like camping and never went again!

  1. What a great story and pictures too!

We lived in Fl. 18 yrs and I never went to the Everglades or the Keys. I’m kicking myself now that we’re far away. 🙂

  2. How romantic. I love that “catch of the day”! We went camping once last year, as each year passes, I like it less and less. There’s nothing wrong with day trips! 🙂
