Mother of the Year Nominee #8

This is our only nominee who was nominated by her husband.

My Wife Jennifer

By Horace Robinson

I would like to nominate my wife Jennifer. For starters when my mom got sick she stepped up and opened our home to her and became her caregiver (mother). We renovated the house and made mom a really nice apartment. After mom moved in Jennifer nursed her, cooked for her, and everything else she needed. Mom was in our home 3 months before she died. During that time Jennifer became a mom herself when our daughter Casey was born.

Jennifer is the best mom ever. She teaches our daughter how to treat people and all of the normal mom things, but even more important, she teaches her about God. I have a daughter from a previous relationship and things where not always good between us but after Jennifer and I got married she treated Lindsey (my daughter) as her own. Jennifer helped me and my daughter mend old wounds and things have never been better.

Almost two years ago we became grandparents and now Jennifer is a wonderful grandmother also. My wife is the best mom ever in so many ways. She cared for my sick mother, is a wonderful mom to our daughter, and also my daughter Lindsey and our granddaughter. She is an awesome mother and I am so proud of her!

Mother of the Year #6

Our mother:  Martha

by; Brittany, Mandy and Keira

A mother is your biggest fan, someone who has your back no matter what.  She provides, nurture, and knows you better than anyone else, yet still unconditionally loves you.

God has blessed us with a mother that is all that and so much more. She always showed us that she loved us but also provided the discipline and guidance we needed. I am sure raising 3 girls was not an easy task, but mom, along with our dad, took everything in stride and we always knew we were loved.

She taught us to respect our elders, love others, love God, and to always take care of each other. We learned from her the beauty of life and how to enjoy everyday like it is our last. She taught us to focus on the positive and to not stay down when we fail.  We learned valuable rules like “i” before “e,” “pretty is as pretty does,” and to never end a sentence in “at”, or you will get the response, “between the ‘a’ and the ‘t’”.

As adults, the lessons still continue.  She is presently fighting breast cancer, for the third time in her life; we know that this cancer is not what defines her.  Through her example she shows us that God is in control and we are to turn everything over to Him.  She is a survivor, a fighter.  She is our hero.

Thank you, Mom, for always being there for us and listening even when you didn’t understand. Thank you for showing us how to be a mother and how to treat our families. Thank you for marrying dad and bringing us up in a Christian home. Thank you for learning from your mother and passing down all those secrets to us. We are truly blessed with the best mom and thank God every day for you!!

Mother of the Year Nominee #5

This entry is from Martha about her mother, Roberta. The rest of the entries will be posted today and voting begins tomorrow!

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.  ~Tenneva Jordan

How can I possibly describe why my mother should  be Mother of the Year….

1.  My mother taught me to love my husband. Even though none of us kids

saw our parents kiss until their 25th anniversary (and only then

because we insisted). I don’t remember my parents ever fighting. They

didn’t always agree, but they used humor and compromise to make it

through. Mom loved my daddy with all her heart and we all KNEW it.

2.  My mother taught me to love God. I remember watching her read her

Bible, and teaching many ladies Bible classes. Due to her example, I’ve

enjoyed teaching these classes too!

3.  My mother taught me to be a giver. I will have to admit that I don’t

think I’ll ever be as giving as she is. She and my dad would be at

almost every surgery of a member of our church family. They also kept

the church directory by their recliners and called several shut ins

every day. My mom has helped so many elderly ladies that I can’t

remember them all, but she would take them places, cook and deliver

meals, and she would even keep their checkbooks and go buy groceries for

them. Even when we felt she was being taken advantage of sometimes, she

never felt that way, and she never stopped giving!

4.  My mother taught me to open my home. She cooks a huge dinner every

Sunday, and there are so many families and singles that have sat at the

table with us. We have had families join us for Christmas, live in our

home, and enjoy baby and wedding showers. We have a very close family

but we are always open to sharing our love with others and my mother has

been responsible for that.

5.  My mother taught me to look on the bright side of things. Her goal

is to see the best in people and in situations. She does not complain

and is an encourager. One of her favorite scriptures is Romana 8:28…

“All things work together for good to those that love the Lord and are

called according to His purpose.” This scripture must  be one of the

reasons she is so positive. She know God will work Good out of al that

happens to His children.

I am so grateful to live close to my mother and to be able to see her

almost every day. God has blessed me!

Mother of the Year Contest at NanaHood

Do you know a mom who deserves some recognition?  Is she able to leap large piles of laundry in a single bound? Is she faster than a speeding locomotive when it comes to whipping up something delicious in the kitchen?

If so, NanaHood wants to hear about her and make her “NanaHood’s Mother of the Year.”

Here’s all you have to do …..

Send me an email telling me what makes this mom so wonderful  (be sure and include a picture of her).  Keep your entries to 300 words or less and email  them to me at Teresa@nanahood.com

All entries will be published and the entry that receives the most comments will be the winner!

The winner of what, you may ask. Well, it could be this….

Or it could be this…..

or this…..

You have probably guessed by now that it isn’t any of those things (a girl can dream, can’t she?)

But it is something really wonderful and I will tell you about it tonight when I have more time. Until then you will just have to work on your entry and wonder about the prize!

So tell me about your mom, or the mom who lives down the street, or your friend who is a terrific mom.  What is it about them that makes them special? I can’t wait to hear from you! This is going to be fun!

Oh and one more thing…if you could help me get the word out about this I would really appreciate it! Link to it from your blog. Write about it on your Facebook page. Take out an ad in your local newspaper (just kidding).

Thank you NanaHood friends!

Cupcake Contest at NanaHood

Today’s post is all because my daughter and granddaughter made cupcakes this week. They were red velvet with whipped buttercream icing and they were so yummy I ate three at once….yep, not good for the mid-section and the reason I need to learn to hula hoop. http://nanahood.com/hula-hoop-queen

Anyway, Abby, the GRANDdaughter, absolutely loves to make cupcakes and we love to do whatever she loves to do.

I could go on and on because if you can dream it…you can make it into a cupcake! But I’m going to close with my personal favorite.  Remember, I am from Kentucky where basketball is more than a sport; t’s a way of life. March Madness is right around the corner and my twins are about to compete (this coming week…Go Hornets!) in their District Tournament. Add all that together and I think you will understand why I made the following cupcake my number one choice.
