Road Blocks of Life

When you were a child did you play the game “I’m going on a trip and I’m going to take a ______.” The person sitting next to you had to repeat what you said and add an item to the list. Every person playing repeated those steps. By the time you got all the way around the circle there would be a big collection of things to remember!

That’s what it felt like this week when I packed for my first blogger’s conference. What should I take? What would I need? It’s easier to pack too much than it is to pack too little, so I think I brought everything but the kitchen sink.

Road Blocks

For all my NanaHood friends who aren’t bloggers, you may not realize this but there are a lot of conferences held every year all across the U.S. specifically for those of us who blog. For years I have wanted to attend a conference but I kept running into road blogs. You know what I mean, those things that pop up on the highway of life and keep us from doing things we really want to do.

Road block #1- Time. We never have enough of it, do we? Every time I thought about attending a conference I would think of 10 other things I needed to be doing.

Road block #2-Money. Conferences aren’t free. I would look at the price tag and think of 10 other things I should spend money instead of a conference.

Road block #3-Distance. The idea of getting on a plane and flying to a big city by myself to a conference where I didn’t know a single person was daunting.

Road block #4- Peeps my age. All the conferences I thought about attending were for mommy bloggers. I couldn’t find a single conference for women my age.

Type-A-Parent Conference

Finally, last December, New Year’s Eve actually. I decided to attend the Type-A Parent conference in Atlanta. I live close enough that I could drive. I have friends in Atlanta who I could visit and while the conference wasn’t for people my age, I knew some other women from an online writer’s group that I belong to who were going. They assured me I would fit right in and learn a lot about blogging.

Yesterday

I arrived in Atlanta yesterday and went to visit one of my friends and today I’m going to  visit some more friends. The conference begins tomorrow morning.

I’m excited and I think I brought everything I need but if I have forgotten something there are lots of places to shop in Atlanta!

I’ll have pictures and stories to share with you next week. Until then…..

What is it that you really want to do that you haven’t done? What road blocks are in your way? Is there a way around them? Give it some thought!

Teresa, Good for you. I LOVE attending conferences. I haven’t been to a specifically blogging one though I have been to two online marketing ones with Ann Sieg. I learned a TON about blogging, etc. Can’t wait to hear all you learn. You will have a lot to contribute too. Don’t hold back! Check out my newest blog when you get a chance. I think you will like it. Go gently now, Amy
