Mom’s Own Words

This is a guest post/interview with a new friend who is a mom blogger. Krisit Maloney who bogs at Mom’s Own Words.
When did you start blogging and why?

I started blogging in 2009. My friend Jane over at Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms was in the process of writing a cookbook. She asked if I would help her market it. I helped her to write articles, press releases and some website content. She started getting bloggers to review her cookbook and suggested that I start a blog. She said review blogs are big. She was absolutely right! My first review and giveaway was her cookbook. I made one of her delicious recipes and featured it in the review.

Here is a link to that first review and I’ve included a picture as well.

How did you come up with the name for your blog?
Coming up with a name was a bit of a challenge. I definitely wanted to feature product reviews and giveaways and my blog was definitely a Mom blog. I am not a big fan of the term “Mommy Blog” I guess because my “mommy” days are over – but hey if shoe fits, right? 🙂 Anyway, I wanted a title with the word mom in it (searchable) that was short and sweet and indicated that I was a writer. My father is a graphic designer and created my blog logo.
Where do you live and what do you like best about it?
I live in North Central MA in a town called Ashburnham. We live on five acres in a very private wooded lot. We don’t see any neighbors from our spot. I love the privacy here. Generally, I love the seasons in New England, although we just had a pretty tough winter. I also love that we are fairly close to some beaches. We go to Maine every summer. I also appreciate that we have some of the best hospitals in the country right here in Boston. I had to have parathyroid surgery in 2008 and was glad I had a top surgeon from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. (The surgery was a success!)
What are your hobbies and why do you like them?
I love to read and watch movies. I am currently reading Gone Girl (Hopefully I will finish before the movie is out in October!) and a book called Monday, Monday. Lately I’m into these series shows on Netflix. I watched Orange is the New Black and am working on House of Cards. I love getting lost in these types of shows. I don’t love cooking, but I like it. I am always looking for low calorie recipes and ideas as I struggle to lose another 20 lbs.  I am starting a garden this year, so maybe that will become a new hobby. Otherwise, I spend a lot of time working on my blog, and would consider that a hobby too.
Tell a little about your children.
I have two boys. James is 12 and in 6th grade. He plays the trumpet, basketball and soccer. He just started track this spring. He is a friendly, happy kid who has a lot of friends and just made the honor roll for the second time! Ryan is 9 and in 4th grade. He has ADHD and school is more of a challenge for him but he is working hard this year. He plays the drum, basketball and soccer as well. I just helped him study all week for his Southeastern States test that he had today. I think he aced it!
Tell about your children’s grandparents. Are they involved? Do they live close? Etc.
My parents live about 30 minutes away. My dad is in his seventies and still works and my mom works with him. He has a custom framing business and does graphic and exhibit design work for a company that he partially owns called Vector Five. They are busy and do not get too involved with the kids, however we see them fairly often.Grant’s mom is also in her seventies and she is wonderful and very hands on. She is about 20 minutes away. She has the boys for sleep overs often and loves doing stuff with them. She does experiments with them and takes them places. (Grant’s dad passed away before I met him.) Not a holiday goes by without a card in the mail for both boys. For another example, she is currently making the boys kilts for the next Bobbie Burns night next year. She is the nicest, most generous person that I’ve ever met in my life and we are all blessed that she is in our lives.

What a wonderful tribute to your MIL. Sounds like the boys are lucky, I had a gram like that. Nice to get to know more about you, and about how you started your blog.

I love getting to learn more about the blogs and bloggers I visit often. It is funny, … everyone visits each others blogs, but we really don’t know much about them. Doing guest posts like this is a very nice way to learn about each other.

It’s so nice to get to know a little more about you, Kristi! I didn’t realize Jane wrote a cookbook and that’s how you got started I am glad you did, though, otherwise I never would have met you 🙂

Teresa, what a nice interview with my friend Kristi from Moms Own Words! Kristi really was a life-saver when I went through the process of publishing my cookbook! I wish I could write half as good as her! Kristi, thanks for sharing the links to my blog and book. 🙂
