Heart of Haiti and Holiday Table Decorations

“I am a  member of the Everywhere Society and they provided me with this product for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.”

Have you heard about Macy’s Heart of Haiti project? Macy’s went to Haiti shortly after the January 12, 2010 earthquake and realized that despite the devastation there was an artist community that existed and was eager to bring their product to market. They launched a product line handmade by Haitian artisans which is for sale at Macys.com. The collection is called Macy’s Gifts That Give Hope.

Did you know that the average Haitian’s annual income is only $400 – for a year!  Add to that, Haiti has an estimated 400,000 artisans (out of a 10M population) who rely solely on their handcrafted goods as a source of income. No other sector of employment even approaches such numbers.

Thanksgiving Table Decorations

It’s hard to tell how beautiful these  handcrafted/handmade candle sticks really are but here are some pictures that may give you an idea. When you look at these candle sticks do they look like they were made from old oil drums?  Well, they were!

We had our annual Thanksgiving dinner at our church tonight and they looked awesome with the other holiday table decorations on the table..

I wanted to show them off and tell others about my appreciation for initiatives like Heart of Haiti and the work Macy’s is doing to give the people of Haiti economically sustainable, fulfilling lives. These artisans are able to create beautiful, unique items using only the scraps and materials they have around them – like the old recycled oil drums I told you about previously. Don’t believe me?  Here’s a link to a video about the making of metal product in Haiti.

Giving Back

This Thanksgiving why not go to Macys.com and purchase gifts that give hope? Every item purchased provides sustainable income for a Haitian artisan and their extended family.  Here’s a link to a video about the program that explains exactly what Heart of Haiti is about.
