Contest Winner of Uprinting business cards

Debby Bartlett Gallup

Congratulations Debby!

Nana of the Week Debbie from Virginia

A few weeks ago we had a “You Deserve It” contest and our winner was Debbie.

Meet Debbie, her "grands" and part of her NanaHood prize!

What do your grandchildren call you and did you choose your title or did they?

Answer: They call me Nana I chose it.

2.       How many grandchildren do you have and how old are they?

Answer: I have 2, they are 10 and 11.  Do they live near you or far away? They have been overseas for the last 6 years.  They are in VA now.

3.       What is your favorite thing to do with your grandchildren?

Answer: Just cuddle.

4.       What makes your grandchildren laugh?

Answer: Everything.  We laugh at just about everything.

5.       What do you wish you could do with them but haven’t gotten to do yet?

Answer: There are so many things I want to do with them now they are close its hard to choose just one.  But just spending time with them is the most important.

6.       If you could change one thing about the world your grandchildren live in, what would it be and why?

Answer: They have grown up with 9/11.  It has affected every part of their lives.  No Wars or conflicts.  Also making all people aware of what we are doing to our envirment.

7.       What traits or characteristics do your grandchildren have that you recognize from their parents?

Answer: My granddaughter has a lot of my daughter in her.  From the way she walks to the way she sits and holds herself.  My grandson has a lot of his fathers.

8.       What do you like best about being a grandparent?

Answer: Being able to spoil them.

9.       What’s the main difference between being a parent and a grandparent?

Answer: Being a parent was all about raising them to be the best they could be and watching them grow.  Being a grandparent is my reward. It truly is a full circle.

10.   What’s your grandchildren’s favorite foods?

Answer: I have not had them for that many visits alone so I really don’t really know this.  Jalyssa likes Goldfish and Jake like vanilla ice cream and will eat it every time.

The “grands” were at Nana Debbie’s when her prize arrived and her granddaughter decorated the NanaHood bag for her. Makes it more personal, don’t you think?

Also, we have very few entries in the NanaHood Mother’s Day Contest (see sidebar). One more week to enter! Why not sign up today?

Nanna of the Week-Patricia from Arkansas

Please give a warm welcome to Nanna Patricia from Arkansas!

1.     What do your grandchildren call you and did you choose your title or did they?

They call me Nanna, (that’s 2-n’s, not one :-) , because I chose the name from my middle name (Anna, which means “Grace”) that never has been used. I love the name Anna and the meaning behind it. My prayer has always been that as a “Nanna”, I will always be a “gracious” grandmother.

2.     How many grandchildren do you have and how old are they?

I have four: Jacob (almost 10), twins, Madison (almost 9) and Emma (almost 9), and Samuel (almost 3).

3.     What is your favorite thing to do with your grandchildren?

Cook! and play games outside.

4.     How do you communicate with your grandchildren? Phone, Facebook, twitter, text?

They live only about 5 minutes away, so we communicate mostly in person. We occasionally chat on the phone.

5.     What do you wish you could do with them but haven’t gotten to do yet?

I would love to take all four of them on vacation to Disney World, but the expense is prohibitive!

6.     If you could change one thing about the world your grandchildren live in, what would it be and why?

I’d like to see them live where God’s peace reigns over all the earth. It’s scary to think what they may have to face with all the wars that are going and may yet spring up in the future.

7.     What traits or characteristics do your grandchildren have that you recognize from their parents?

Jacob is very loving and patient like his dad. Emma is tall, slim, red headed and sensitive like her Nanna (and her dad) always was when growing up. Madison is shorter, more focused and good natured like her mom. Samuel is friendly, outgoing, and very loving like both his parents.

8.  What do you like best about being a grandparent?

I’ve enJOYed getting to rock all four of our grands while singing them to sleep. I love having rocking chair times with all of them.

9.     Where do you live and what do you like best about living there?

I live in central Arkansas. I love living here because the schools and colleges in our town are great for growing well-prepared kids. I also love living here because of the natural beauty all around us in this state. We always have somewhere we can go and involve the family.

10.    What’s your grandchildren’s favorite foods (please include a recipe!)

All four of them definitely like my homemade Peanut Butter Cookies. Here’s the recipe (which was passed down from my mama, because it was one of my favorites):

Pat’s Peanut Butter Cookies

Ingredients:

2 ½ Cups all purpose flour

½  tsp. soda

½  tsp. salt

1 tsp. baking powder

1 stick Blue Bonnet margarine, softened to room temp.

1 stick REAL BUTTER (no preference on brand)

2 Tbsp. Crisco solid (plain)

1 Cup granulated sugar

1 Cup moist brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs, beaten slightly

1 Cup smooth peanut butter

1 tsp. vanilla flavoring

Directions:

Sift flour, soda, and baking powder together and set aside. Using electric mixer, cream sugars until well blended. Add softened margarine and Crisco and blend well; then add eggs, peanut butter and vanilla. Mix thoroughly until smooth and fluffy.

Do not use electric mixer for remaining steps.

Use spatula to combine flour mixture only long enough to form a smooth dough.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees while placing dough on cookie sheets. Using a cookie dropper or large tablespoon, dip rounded balls to UNGREASED cookie sheets. Press cookies in a criss-cross fashion with tines of a fork dipped in flour. Bake 10 to 12 minutes (depending on your oven—Mine takes about 11 minutes for a perfect cookie.) You’ll want them to be very lightly golden. Remove and allow to sit on cookie sheet a minute before removing to countertop (aluminum foil or waxed paper) to cool completely before storing. Makes about 6 to 7 dozen. (depending on how large you make them, of course!)

NOTE: For variation, try tossing in 1 package of Nestlé’s Peanut Butter & Milk Chocolate Swirled Chips into the dough. Drop on baking sheet with cookie dropper, just as you would for regular peanut butter cookies, but don’t press with a fork. The cookie will flatten and “crinkle” on top as it bakes.

Nana of the Week-Tona

Please say a big TEXAS HOWDY to Tona!

1. What do your grandchildren call you and did you choose your title or did they?

Answer: My Grand-babies call me Nana. My daughter chose this name for me while she was pregnant.

2. How many grandchildren do you have and how old are they?

Answer: I have 2 granddaughters. Adrienne Jolee, who is 6 and Caleigh Marie who is almost 5

3. What is your favorite thing to do with your grandchildren?

Answer: We love to play with barbies and do any type of crafting, painting and drawing. Playing dress-up. We also play outside and go on “treasure” hunts for pine cones, leaves, rocks to build little fortes for dinosaurs and fairies.

4.How do you communicate with your grandchildren? Phone, Facebook, twitter, text?

Answer: I talk with them on the phone. But I am able to see them often.

5. What do you wish you could do with them but haven’t gotten to do yet?

Answer: I want to take them to Disney in Florida. Since they are both young I have years of things I want to do with both of them, just as I did with my daughter..

6. If you could change one thing about the world your grandchildren live in, what would it be and why?

Answer: I see that children now a days seem to have to grow-up so fast. I wish they would be able to slow down and be kids longer, that life wouldnt have to be so serious so fast for them. When I was a child we did so much more. without cable tv, cellphones, xbox, fear of kidnappings. We road our bikes all over town with our friends and played from dawn to dusk. This has been lost, I wish this could be brought back, not only for my grandbabies, but for all the younger generations.
7. What traits or characteristics do your grandchildren have that you recognize from their parents?

Answer: Both of the girls are very artistic, which comes from mom. The oldest Granddaughter talks like chatty Kathy, like her mom. Again the oldest wants to be a Dr. like her Dad and looks like her dad. The younger grandbaby is more stubborn like her dad, even to the point of crossing arms and standing her ground. Both have facial features that stem from my side of the family.
8. What do you like best about being a grandparent?

Answer: I love that as a grandparent I can be more laid back and not worry about making mistakes like being a parent. We get to play so much more!!!
9. Where do you live and what do you like best about living there?

Answer: I came from a small town and raised my children in a small town. Now living in the Houston, TX area we can do so much more like going to water parks, going to the ocean, museums, balls games, Rodeo, all types of resturants, tons of parks, and not have to drive very far to do any of it.
10. What’s your grandchildren’s favorite foods (please include a recipe!)

Answer: This may seem odd but neither of my grandbabies have 1 specific favorite food at this time, They have so many choices. My daughter is a fabulous cook too. When they visit me I do usually have fruits on hand and popcorn, juice boxes, as they have been raised to think this is some type of “candy”. We all avoid giving them candy as much as possible. This is also something I raised my daughter to think when she was very young ;)

Nana of the Week-Debra from Colorado Springs

1.       What do your grandchildren call you and did you choose your title or did they?

I’m Nana and I picked it before my first granddaughter was born 8 1/2 years ago. It seemed important at the time although for the life of me, I can’t remember why!   (Although Kylee insists on calling me Nanny.)

2.       How many grandchildren do you have and how old are they?

5 so far: Keera 8 1/2, Keegan 5 1/2, Kylee 4 in March, Cielo 3 1/2, and our newest “star”, Sinatra, just turned one.

3.       What is your favorite thing to do with your grandchildren?

Do I have to pick just one???   I love to have them overnight, one on one. We watch movies and read together before sleep, then in the morning either haul the stepstool up to the stove so they can help make breakfast or go out to one of the fun places in Colorado Springs downtown and then to church. Hiking comes in a very close second.

4.       How do you communicate with your grandchildren? Phone, Facebook, twitter, text?

That question gives me an unexpected vision into the future…..   texting or FB’ing with these kids!  Right now it’s up close and in person or on the phone.    And I still love to send them snail mail once in a while, even the ones in the same town.

5.       What do you wish you could do with them but haven’t gotten to do yet?

I want to travel with them and show them how big the world really is.    My (very brave) mother took my sons to Ireland when they were teenagers; I’d love to give my own grandkids that kind of experience.

6.       If you could change one thing about the world your grandchildren live in, what would it be and why?

I would take away the huge burden of debt they’re going to bear and put back the hope that burden diminishes.

7.       What traits or characteristics do your grandchildren have that you recognize from their parents?

I have grands from three different kids…    my older son has the youngest child so we are still watching her personality emerge.    My younger son has three and each one has some of his qualities….   musicality, perseverance, optimism, humor.    My stepdaughter married a Latino and her daughter  DEFINITELY  got the fiery temperament!    But each one is definitely his or her own little person as well and it’s a great joy to see the people they are becoming.

8.       What do you like best about being a grandparent?

Well, that unconditional love thing is a pretty good deal.   But for me the best is feeling that I’ve garnered some wisdom over the decades and learned from the mistakes I made with their parents and I can bring that experience to my interaction with the next generation. Sort of a “do-over”.

9.       Where do you live and what do you like best about living there?

I moved to Colorado Springs a year and a half ago specifically to be with the three grandkids here, although I still spend significant time in Arizona with the other two.    With complete objectivity, I think Colorado Springs is the prettiest town in the country.     It’s a wonderful, retro place for children to grow up.     Clean air, clean water, lots of outdoor activity and very friendly people.

10.   What’s your grandchildren’s favorite foods (please include a recipe!)

My kids probably won’t remember me for my cooking unless their tastes change significantly in the coming years.      They are healthy eaters but my predilection for whole grains, odd vegetables and complex salads isn’t alway shared.   (“Seriously, Nana…. sunflower seed butter?    Where’s the  Jif?”)

But I do make a mean root beer float!

Thanks, Debra! If you would like to be Nana of the Week contact me at teresa@nanahood.com and I’ll get back to you!

Still need addresses of two winners of prizes from Facebook Page. I have Inez, but not other two winners–Charlotte Huffman or Jan Goad of Tulsa, Oklahoma. I can’t mail your prize until I know where to mail it to!
