Friday Fun Links… the best of!
Posted by: | CommentsChar here…
In just a FEW days, we’ll be celebrating one year of NanaHood.com. We’re celebrating with a BIG BIRTHDAY BASH, and you are invited! (Pssst, you might want to click on that link and read the Birthday Bash post. Then you just might want to leave a comment and twitter and fb… just sayin’).
As I was thinking about what to write about for today’s Fun Friday Links, it occurred to be that a “best of” post might be fun. Teresa might not ever think to point to some of her best posts throughout the year, so I figured I could do it for her! (And just a tiny hint to those of you paying attention: these links MIGHT just help a little with a game we’ll be playing next Wednesday).
So, here goes… some of the best of NanaHood.com, from year one:
- Pink Ladies, Parking, and other Problems - this was one of the first posts Teresa wrote, and I remember laughing and thinking, “yes, she is going to do JUST fine with this new blog”
- Nana of the Week… Cheryl Booth – ok, this one wasn’t written by Teresa, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to praise my Mama one more time
- Us Old People Need Something To Do – another one that made me laugh
- Poppa and the shwing set – cute post about the Poppa behind the scenes
- Whispers From God – this one makes me cry
- Cooking, cleaning and dealing with a house full of boys – makes me nervous thinking about my future with my two adventurous and creature-loving boys
- Every Other Weekend – just read this one
- Crafting With Mema – Intro – another post NOT by Teresa, but once again, I couldn’t pass up the chance to praise my Mama and show off my kids (and, in case anyone wonders, we WILL have more Crafting With Mema segments soon).
- Ten Things Nanas are Better at Blogging About – one of the best and most fun “why you should blog” posts around
- Giving Thanks for Courageous Kids – the post about our charity of choice here at NanaHood
- This I know – what Teresa knows for sure
- Giving Thanks for God’s Plan for Me – all of Teresa’s gratituesday posts are great, but I really, really liked this one
- Giving Thanks for Mothers – some really great advice from Teresa’s mama
- Wordless Wednesday – no words, just beauty
- Giving Thanks for my Poochy Tummy – this one makes me smile (and it makes me wish I lived close enough to go shopping with Teresa)
- Royalty for a day – every girl dreams of wearing a crown at least once in her life
- Grandparenting Questionnaire – this one isn’t a post, but we still need folks to fill out the survey!
- And do NOT forget to visit the BIRTHDAY BASH post and make a comment and then tweet/facebook/blog and make MORE comments! You could win the FIRST game of our Birthday Bash!
Happy Almost One-Year Birthday, Teresa! Love ya!

Any news?
Posted by: | CommentsMany years ago when I lived with my parents every Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock the phone would ring and the voice at the other end of the line would ask, “Any news?” The woman’s name was Jasper and she wrote a column for our hometown newspaper. The column was always full of things like where people ate dinner, a list of folks who were sick, and any exciting social events she might know of (lol). Once she wrote something about my mother’s hair that went something like this, “Snow flakes must have come early this year as Shirley Bell’s hair is now frosted. It is as lovely as a winter snow.”
Mom was not pleased.
Anyway, today I’m sharing a random news story about a nana from Pennsylvania and thought you might have some you want to share. So as Jasper once said, “Any news?” If so be sure and send it in. We love hearing from visitors!
A Very Naughty Nana
A Pennsylvania woman who denied leaving her 8-year-old granddaughter behind with stolen goods was ordered to stand trial on shoplifting charges. Elaine Weimer, 50, was ordered to stand trial on Wednesday on charges of retail theft, endangering the welfare of a child, and corruption of minors.
The girl was not charged and told state police her grandmother told her “to get stuff for her grandmother and her grandmother made her hold the bags.”
Obviously not all nanas are nice!
Help Us Celebrate Our Birthday Next Month
August is almost here and there’s lots going on behind the scenes at NanaHood to get ready for our very first Birthday Bash!
It’s hard to believe but on August 11th NanaHood will have it’s first birthday (that’s the date of our first ever post) and boy do we have a celebration planned!
Char and I have been emailing back and forth daily and have come up with lots of fun ideas. We will have offer lots of great prizes for women of all ages. So be sure and stay tuned during the next few weeks as we continue to drop hints about our birthday party plans!
Everyone is invited and we do hope you’ll stop by, register for prizes and wish us Happy Birthday!
Friday Fun Links – 4th of July Edition
Posted by: | CommentsHey, hey… it’s almost the 4th of July! And around NanaHood this weekend, we’re having one BIG BASH of a time! Teresa has slashed prices in the NanaHood shop by $4.00 (for everything in the shop!), and I have a bunch of fun red, white, and blue themed links for you today.
So, let’s get started with some patriotic fun:
- Definitely check out the NanaHood shop for the big sale… because what’s more American than a holiday sale?
- Jennifer of Adventures in McQuill-land wrote a fun piece over at the HomeSchool Classroom about a new family tradition – making 4th of July t-shirts. You have to check this one out! AND here is a post she wrote just last night about their 2010 T-shirts!
- My family is heading to San Diego for the holiday weekend (HALLELUJAH, it’s COOL there!), so I needed a few car activities for the kids. I found THIS and THIS and THIS
- And even though it’s summertime, I’m still a homeschooling mom, so I downloaded and printed off this patriotic activity book for the kids to put together and work on.
- Martha has been talking ALL week about how we are going to “Diego, but NOT the person” (because, she’s three, so the only Diego SHE knows is Diego from Nick Jr.). I really do think she still expects to SEE Diego the person…in San Diego. So, how funny is it that I found this adorable fan craft for the 4th of July? I’m sorely tempted to make it for her, and REALLY confuse my child.
- And I couldn’t help but link up to a couple more Nick Jr activities for the 4th – Wonder Pets Activity Printable and a State Map placemat.
- When the kids start complaining about how bored they are in the car, we’ll use these State Fun Facts cards to liven things up
- We will of course be going to the beach in San Diego (YAY!), and so I found a couple of fun links for THAT part of our trip. I expect we’ll find a few (hundred) sea shells to bring home, so I’m prepared with two crafts – Personalized Sea Shells and Sea Shell Critters
And it wouldn’t be the 4th of July without REALLY yummy summer foods. Here are a few recipes you might like to try:
- Grilled Corn with three Butter Flavors (YUM)
- Red White and Blue Delight
- Grilled Chicken Bruschetta
- Cherry Pie Cups
- Patriotic Pops
- Red White and Blue Pie
- Watermelon Pop Stars
- Marble Star Cut-outs
- Frosty Fireworks
And now I’m hungry… and ready for the weekend to officially start!

Fun Friday Links – the Father’s Day edition
Posted by: | CommentsSo, I had a very similar moment to Teresa’s moment last week… around about Thursday. I stopped mid-stream of whatever was happening at that moment and thought, “OH NO… it’s June already, and what if Father’s Day is on Sunday… I’m not prepared!” I was relieved to find that I had another week.
And of course I used that week entirely to my advantage and am now totally prepared. Or not. We’ve had kind of a rough week around here (is that a theme or what?), and I’m still as yet, totally UNprepared.
I have a day and a half though, so I’m hopeful I can pull something together for my husband by Sunday morning. (Did you know if you google “Last Minute Father’s Day gifts” you’ll get over a million and a half links?)
With that in mind, here are some Fun Friday Links to help me (and hopefully others of you who are just like me) honor my husband, who just happens to be an amazing dad!
- Jennifer from Adventures in McQuill-land has written a fun post over at Homeschool Classroom about Father’s Day gifts.
- Some cute ideas for Father’s Day gifts
- How about a cute hand-made card that includes tickets for a “date with dad”? My husband would love this one!
- A few printables to help you make a creative card for Dad
- Father’s Day coloring pages
- Father’s Day crafts and cards kids can make
- Apparently, I’m not in the minority with this Last Minute Father’s Day thing. I found a bunch of blog articles on this very topic today. Here’s a good one with some gift ideas.
- And a blog post with a few “feel-good” ideas for gifts for Dad.
Like I mentioned above, there are over 1.5 million responses if you do a search in google, so I’m going to leave you with the list above and go see what the kids and I can get done today!
Friday Fun Links – As Random As I Can Get!
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s been a tough week around here… I had a cold/flu thing that knocked me down for several days, so my house is a bit of a mess, and my kids are tired of eating mac and cheese and cereal. I’ve spent a lot of time curled up on the couch with my laptop, and I have a lot of random (possible fever-induced) fun links for you today!
In no particular order, rhyme or reason:
- How to Teach Your Kids to Crochet – I’ve taken up crocheting recently, after not doing it for several years, and I’m slightly obsessed. The kids are really interested in what I’m doing, and I’m thinking it would be a good “eye-hand-following directions” kind of activity to teach them. Or it might just give us all a head-ache. But, I think we’ll try!
- Crochet Patterns for Kids – to go along with the above link
- Homemade Orange Sherbet – Now that summer is here (i.e. 105 degree temps!), I’ve been dying for some orange sherbet. How easy is this recipe?!
- VBS activities – we are in the process of planting a church here in our area of Las Vegas, and I’ve had Vacation Bible School on the brain lately – thinking it might be a great outreach to local families. Anyway, I found a ton of great sites with fun activities. This particular links has great Egyptian activities, which works perfect for OUR family, since my oldest is enamored of all things Egypt.
- Healthy Strawberry Shortcake - Laura at Heavenly Homemakers has a great new series about making yummy HEALTY food for celebrations and parties. I’m planning to make a run for the store later to get all the fixins for this Strawberry Shortcake.
- Scheduling Quiet Time – this may not be as MUCH of an issue for Nanas and Grandmas, but for those of us with little ones still running around need all the help we can get. This was an encouraging article with hints for getting quiet time.
- Quiet Time for Kids – as Moms aren’t the only ones who need quiet time! A few tips for helping your kids establish quiet time habits.
My kids are currently NOT being quiet… and apparently need my attention, so that’s all for this week! Happy Friday!
