Friday Links
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s time again for Friday linkage… and I think I’m going to stick with my “random” theme, because that seems to be working well for me. (Please say it works for you too?)
- Have you subscribed to GRAND magazine yet? if not, you should go check it out, and sign up! (Pssst… Teresa has an article in this month’s issue).
- Just watched this really cool music video. I didn’t listen to the words much (was too enthralled by the video), so I apologize if there was anything iffy in the lyrics.
- Compassion International has it’s latest team of bloggers in Kenya right now. You can click on over and read about their trip (and previous trips) on the CI website, and then click on the bloggy links too.
- Speaking of the Compassion International bloggy links, don’t miss this one by MckMama.
- Just before I started to write this post, we had a little incident with my laptop. The incident included Samuel… a glass of water… and my laptop. I’m not sure yet what the fate will be for my laptop, but in case you ever have a similar incident, this link is helpful.
- I tried really hard to be kind during this laptop incident. But, as it was happening, I knew I was failing to be as kind as I should have been. Samuel didn’t mean to fry the laptop… it was an accident. And he is far more valuable to me than a computer, although based on my reaction he may have been wondering about that. An hour or so after I finally calmed down, I spent a little time reading this verse in James. And then I read these. And then I went ahead and read this whole chapter. And then I spent some time praying about my reactions the next time we have an incident.
Here’s hoping for a brighter, calmer, less stressful Friday… and for YOU TOO!
Fun Friday Links – going random again!
Posted by: | CommentsRandom seems to be my new middle name. Or maybe that’s frenzied. Harried. Too busy for my own good? Yeah, those all fit. It’s mostly a GOOD frenzied/harried/too busy… but still!
- DON’T FORGET – On February 27th (that’s tomorrow), Compassion International and a whole host of fabulous folks will be putting on a benefit concert to help Haiti. Check out Help Haiti Live for all the details. And if you aren’t lucky enough to live in Nashville or LA, you can watch the concert live on their website. 100% of the donations made through the website will be going straight to Compassion International for Haiti.
- Did you know that scientists have finally determined what killed the young King Tut, AND they now know who is father and mother were, thanks to DNA tests? You didn’t know this? Well, let me link you to an article ALL about it: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ml_egypt_king_tut We’ve been reading, and re-reading, and RE-READING this article for the last week and a half. (And by “we”, I mean the 8 year old boy in our house).
- Many of you have probably learned these lessons already, but for those of us still learning them, I thought the “Top 10 Things I Have Learned From My Children” post by JennyOnTheSpot was a really good one. (Except for #6 – we can’t do that one around here, although I do agree with it in principle!)
- I’m not very good at decorating for the holidays. My husband actually likes to do that more than I do… but I’m TRYING to get better and get more in the “spirit” of things around here. (Yes, I can tend towards the grumpy/scrooge type of personality). ANYWAY, I did some searching around etsy this week, trying to find something cute for the house for spring. I didn’t actually find anything that jumped out at me, BUT I DID find this and this. They made me smile…
- Oh, and I also found THIS on etsy… (click if you have little girls with cute hair). My daughter has been taking her sweet time growing hair, but I think I can finally start purchasing these kinds of items. YAY!
And I think that’s about as random as I can get! Happy Friday, folks!
Friday Fun Links – Totally Random
Posted by: | CommentsWait, how did FRIDAY get here so fast?
“Random” blog posts are becoming popular – and I’m always one to jump on a trend – so today’s Friday Fun Links will be totally random links for you to enjoy!
- NBC.com – I’m linking to NBC, because they have a stunning winter image on their home page that sits there for a few seconds before the rest of the page loads – in honor of the Olympics, I’m sure. Just thought you might like to see it!
- On February 27th, Compassion International and a whole host of fabulous folks will be putting on a benefit concert to help Haiti. Check out Help Haiti Live for all the details. And if you aren’t lucky enough to live in Nashville or LA, you can watch the concert live on their website. 100% of the donations made through the website will be going straight to Compassion International for Haiti.
- My friend Laura of HeavenlyHomemakers.com has four boys. Recently they recorded the youngest son’s laugh on their answering machine. It’s such a great laugh, and never fails to make me smile, and I always rather hope that she won’t answer when I call, because I love to hear the laugh. Apparently I’m not the only one who likes it, because Laura was kind enough to take some video of Malachi “doing” his laugh, and she posted it on HeavenlyHomemakers.com for me all to enjoy.
- I like to read the Pioneer Woman blog, and I especially enjoy her photos. This post made me giggle a few times. Thought you might like to “read” it too.
- I also like to read Lysa TerKeurst’s blog, and last week she had a post that spoke to me a bit. Once again, thought you might like to read it.
And that’s what I’ve got today, folks. Happy Friday!!
(Feel free to post YOUR favorite random links in the comments!)
Friday Fun Links… anyone feel like shopping?
Posted by: | CommentsGood morning… er, afternoon! It’s Char again, and I am running behind as usual. I have been planning this post all week (in my head), and was hoping to surprise Teresa by having it up EARLY for a change.
But… my mom is in town, and one of the ways she is blessing me while she is here is to allow me to sleep in occasionally, while she hangs out with my kids. (Just an FYI to all you Nanas, Memas, and Grandmas… letting your daughter or daughter-in-law sleep in while you care for the kids? SUPER PRICELESS BLESSING!)
I managed to roll out of bed at the ridiculous hour of 10:45 a.m. Which is after NOON in many other places of the country (sorry Teresa!)… and so here I am, writing a late Friday Fun Links post.
Ok, all that aside… the links post for today is going to center around ETSY.COM. Have you heard of etsy? If not, you are in for a treat. And if you have, you are probably STILL in for a treat. ETSY.COM is an online marketplace filled with thousands and thousands of crafters, artists, vintage sellers, and more. Each artist/crafter/individual has their own shop, and you can find just about anything your heart might desire in terms of hand-crafted goodness and vintage items. (Of course, vintage is considered anything over 20 years old, which means… items from when I was in high-school… ARE VINTAGE. (And I’m not even a Nana yet!))
So, how about a few links, eh? I’m breaking the links up into categories, to make your online perusing/shopping a bit easier. Just one word of caution… etsy is ADDICTIVE, so be careful…

Friday Fun Links – all about Egypt!
Posted by: | CommentsAs has become the Friday routine at NanaHood, it’s Char here, with your Friday Fun Links post…
This morning I sat down at my PC to find “fun links” for you, and I had four different browser windows open on four different King Tut websites. Why King Tut, you ask? Well, because my son is obsessed with King Tut and all things Egyptian. And yesterday he wanted to write a special message in hieroglyphics, but was destraught when he couldn’t find his special “hieroglyphics code” worksheet. Google to the rescue!
We have actually been spending a LOT of time “in Egypt” lately – the Natural History Museum here in Las Vegas opened up a new King Tut exhibit last weekend, and Samuel has been there three times already since they opened it. I wondered briefly, on the third visit, if he would be “bored”… but no. The exhibit has only fueled the fire for his obsession. In fact, we are planning a very special King Tut themed birthday party for later this month… AT the museum!
All THAT to say, today’s fun links are a little different than normal (whatever that is)… and I am going to share some fun “kid-friendly” Egyptian links for you (since I apparently can’t get away from them anyway).
- King Tut Fun Activities – http://www.tutsanfrancisco.org/content/fun
- Facts about King Tut – http://www.king-tut.org.uk/life-of-king-tut/facts-about-king-tut.htm
- King Tut costume – http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/mummified-king-tut-662412/
- Write Your Name with Hieroglyphics – http://greatscott.com/down/write.pdf
- King Tut Puzzles – http://www.kingtutone.com/kids/puzzle/
- Pyramid Maze – http://www.kingtutone.com/kids/maze/
- Coloring Pages – http://www.kingtutone.com/kids/color/
- Egyptian Book craft project – http://www.kinderart.com/arthistory/bookofthedead.shtml
And since I realize most of the King Tut/Egyptian links will appeal more to your sons and grandsons, here are a few fun “girly” links (with a Valentine’s Day theme) for your daughters and granddaughters:
- Bottle Cap Locket - http://www.kinderart.com/seasons/locket.shtml
- Egg Cup Flowers – http://www.kinderart.com/recycle/eggcupflowers.shtml
- Candy Rings – http://crafts.kaboose.com/candy-rings.html
- I Give You My Heart collage – http://www.kinderart.com/seasons/giveyoumyheart.shtml
- Lollipop Cozies – http://crafts.kaboose.com/lollipop-cozies.html
And just a little P.S. The above list of links were a little sneek peek into something coming soon… we”ll be launching a new series here at NanaHood called “Crafting With Mema”, based on my children’s activities and crafting projects with my mother (their Mema). We’re even hoping to share a video or two! Stay tuned… and HAPPY FRIDAY!
Friday Fun Links… more “less of me”
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s the last Friday of “less of me” month here at NanaHood, and in keeping with that monthly theme, I have more “helping” kinds of links for you today.
There are so many ways to give, in big and small ways. Below are just a few more “small ways” you might be inspired to help.
I’ve included a little extra info for each link from each of the websites’ ABOUT pages:
- Mocha Club - an online community of people giving up the cost of 2 mochas a month – or $7 – to fund relief and development projects in Africa. We work in five main project areas: Clean Water, Education, Child Mothers + Women At Risk, Orphan Care + Vulnerable Children, and HIV/AIDS + Healthcare.
- GiveBread.org – Bread for a Hungry World is a non-profit organization with the mission of sharing love by meeting the physical and spiritual needs of hurting people worldwide. Founded in 1984, Bread began by feeding people starving in Botswana because of drought. Through the vision and energy of one man, Jon Jones, Bread for a Hungry World expanded to serve children in Honduras and fed over 100,000 people stranded in Burmese refugee camps. Jon’s pioneering spirit and work over 18 years is the foundation for the Bread programs today.
- Global Samaritan – Global Samaritan Resources was born on the concept of redistribution of the world’s possessions. Today one billion people or one of six people in our world subsist on less than a dollar a day. Yet in America our resources are enormous and waste is endemic. Could Christians do something about sharing our surplus with the needy abroad? The answer is “yes”.
- Healing Hands International – In 1991, a meeting was held in Nashville, Tennessee, that included several people interested in helping meet the mounting needs for medical supplies and equipment in the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. Dr. Randy Steger, marketing professor at David Lipscomb University, presented a proposal to serve as a pilot program that would utilize the energy and abilities of students to solicit donations of supplies. Through this urgent need for humanitarian relief the students organized the Healing Hands ministry, which was later incorporated as Healing Hands International in 1994.
- Manna Global – In March of 2009, Manna Global Ministries, also known as MGM, began as an expansion of the current work in the Dominican Republic through MannaDR, Manna Haiti (previously Manna International Relief and Development) and Beacon Light Ministries. The projects in Haiti and the Dominican Republic have been long-standing outreach and we are glad to continue the development of these early works. This will also expand into new works in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and other countries. These combined endeavors will give vast new opportunities through missions, discipleship, worldwide relief efforts and simple everyday Christian fellowship.
- Hope for Haiti’s Children – Mission – To demonstrate Christian compassion and create opportunities for poverty bound Haitian children to get an education and become outstanding leaders.
