Pistol Packing Nanas

My grandparents lived on a farm and never bothered to lock their doors at night. Unfortunately those days are gone. Break-ins and robberies happen every where.

Not long ago a lady and her husband were at a nearby mall shopping. Her husband was waiting for her in the car. When he saw his wife coming he got out and opened the trunk of the car for her. In the meantime a car pulled up behind the lady and a man jumped out and grabbed her purse, which she was wearing on her shoulder. She didn’t let go and he dragged her several feet across the parking lot and broke her shoulder. He did get the purse, jumped in the car with another man, and they disappeared. The victims were able to get the license plate number and the robbers were arrested, but I don’t imagine that shopping at the mall will ever be much fun for this lady again.

This weekend I read about a friend of mine who was out of town on business and her purse was stolen. Within one hour she had over $3000 worth of charges on her credit card. My friend wasn’t hurt and I am so thankful, but what an inconvenience!

One of the best suggestions I found about purses said in part; If you’re carrying a purse, make sure it has short straps so that it rides right under your arm. And if you don’t have a purse with a short strap, swing your purse over your body with the bag part of the purse in front of you. It’s much harder for a thief to steal your purse from the front than the side or back. Also don’t carry your wallet in your back pocket or in the side pocket of a jacket. Carry it in your front pocket, or in an interior jacket pocket. But if you’re carrying it inside your jacket, be sure to keep your jacket buttoned or zipped.

Nanas that Pack

I hate guns. They scare me silly, but I understand why some think it’s wise to know how to shoot them. I have a friend who is a Realtor.  We were going somewhere the other day and I had to wait for her while she went to renew her license to carry a concealed weapon. This pistol packing nana keeps the gun with her at all times and I don’t blame her.

A Georgia nana recently found herself in the middle of an attempted robbery.

Lulu Campbell just dropped off her grandson at her daughter’s house early Saturday morning when someone demanded money outside her car, threatening to shoot her.

The robber pointed a gun at her car window and demanded she open her window. Lulu replied, ‘Baby, you’re going to kill me anyway, so I don’t have to open it!’”

The man fired at her but missed. The 57-year-old fired back, striking him in the chest. Her truck sustained eight bullet holes in the hood, one in the grill. Both front side windows were destroyed. The second man fled after she shot at him.

All I can say about that is “Don’t mess with Lulu!”

Ladies (and gentlemen) be safe! It’s a dangerous world out there!

This week I had the pleasure of speaking to a charming troop of Girl Scouts. The topic was Mothers and Daughters and after I was finished the girls each read something they had written about their moms. I asked them if I could borrow their essays to share with you and they said yes.

Because Mother’s Day is right around the corner I’m going to be posting lots of things to honor mom. If you have a letter, a quote, a thought, a photo, or anything else you’d like to see on NanaHood about Mother’s Day, please send it to me at teresa@nanahood.com

From the Girl Scout Troop….

Hope Anderson, Age 7 writes about her mom, Brandy

I love my mom because she does a lot of stuff with me. She goes fishing with me and she is a nice mom. My mom is speacil to me.

Last summer my sister and I went to camp and my mom came as a chaperone. At the camp we had two classes. Mine were cooking and art studies. My mom was a helper in art studio and she took pictures of my friends and me. We made a lot of cool things, such as paper mache sculptures and homemade chalk.

Me and my mom and my friend went to see the play Hairspray. We laughed at the whole play and had a good time together. After the play we were walking to the car and we saw a puppy behind the bushes. I said, “Oh, what a cute puppy.” Then it started barking at us. We were yelling and told mom to hurry and unlock the car door. I scraped mmy knee and my friend hit her head. It hurt but it was a funny pain. I had a good time with my mom!

My favorite memory with mom is when she helped me golf. We went golfing at the Smoky Moungtains. It was fun. Me and mom had fun golfing.

Just in case you don’t remember how Mother’s Day got started….

In the United States, Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe  who was famous for writing the words to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”). But it was a woman who was never a mother herself who led the campaign for national recognition of Mother’s Day.

Anna Jarvis held a ceremony in 1907 in Grafton, West Virginia, to honor her mother, who had died two years earlier. Jarvis’ mother had tried to establish Mother’s Friendship Days as a way of dealing with the aftermath of the Civil War. Anna Jarvis began a campaign to create a national holiday honoring mothers. She and her supporters wrote to ministers, businessmen and politicians, and they were successful in their efforts.

In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize the new holiday, and the nation followed in 1914 when President Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day. Jarvis used white carnations as a symbol for mothers, because carnations represented sweetness, purity and the endurance of mother love. (Today, white carnations represent a mother who has died, while red carnations represent a living mother.)

Aging Gracefully

Have you ever heard the expression “aging gracefully?” I’m not sure where I heard it and I’m not sure how to do it either.

First of all, I am not-nor have I ever been graceful. By the time I was in 8th grade I was six feet tall and had feet so big they were exceptionally easy to trip over.

Then there’s the aging part. Why is it that we humans can’t wait to grow up and then spend so much time on clothes and products to make us look younger?  Have you ever been to the department store and checked out the womens makeup section? You could easily spend a small (or large) fortune on creams that supposedly get rid of wrinkles.

While I haven’t got the aging gracefully thing figured out yet I do know how NOT to age gracefully. Have you ever ween older women wearing clothes that even their daughters shouldn’t wear? If it is too skimpy for a young person what makes them think it looks good on them? I challenge you to go to the mall (or the water park if you are really brave) and just sit and people watch. It won’t take you long to find someone who is NOT aging gracefully.

I do know at least one person who aged gracefully, my grandmother.

My grandmother was one of the classiest women I’ve ever known and if I think about her I have a really good idea of what it means to age gracefully.

Grandma Layne

1. Never worried about what others thought and never tried to impress anyone.

2. Always dressed modestly.

3. Never tried to draw attention to herself.

4. Was true to her faith, family and friends.

5. Was a wonderful example of a good Christian mother and grandmother.

I think society has problems with aging because we don’t want to accept it as part of God’s plan. We want to change His will and stay young forever and we can’t.

There is a season for all things and yes folks, aging is part of it. It’s up to us whether we do it gracefully or not.

Prayers for a Friend’s Aching Heart

If you visit NanaHood often you know that my cousin Martha is a 3 time breast cancer survivor. You also know that I have way too many friends who have fought breast cancer. This morning a very good friend, Char (she’s my NanaHood tech support partner), lost her mother-in-law to breast cancer. I am so sorry, Char! I love you and am praying for you and your family!

I can’t say it enough….I HATE CANCER!

This morning I renewed my membership with Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink organization. My team name is NanaHood Friends and Family. Last year we raised almost $2,000 and this year I would love to double that amount!

Cousin Martha and her friends at a Relay for Life event.

Just in case you’ve ever wondered how funds are used….

Susan G. Komen is accredited by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, and have been rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator for the past six years.

All Passionately Pink donations help support Komen’s breast cancer research initiatives.  And, just as importantly Passionately Pink donations are shared with our network of local Affiliates to help provide life-saving education, screening and treatment programs at the community level.

Please join the NanaHood Friends and Family team again this year as we do our best to wipe out breast cancer!
