Instead of reviewing a book for you that Abby and I like to read, I’m going to remind you of some of the reasons why we should all read to our children and grandchildren.  So look them over and then go grab a book, a child (preferably one you know) and read!

Of course things are a little different today than when this book was written. Once when my nephew was about three he got lost in Walmart and they locked the doors while my frantic sister-in-law went ballistic.  We found him totally entranced in watching The Kentucky Headhunters music video.  He was unscathed but it took my sister-in-law hours to calm down.

Books for Nana….

I’ve found a new mystery writer that I am really enjoying reading. She’s not new, I just haven’t been aware of her until now. The author’s name is Laura Lippman and so far I’ve read four of her books. The Sugar House, In Big Trouble, In a Strange City and The Last Place.  The heroine of her books is a private eye named Tess. She’s gutsy, a little flakey at times and hangs out with some interesting characters.

I went to Ms. Lippman’s web site (http://www.lauralippman.com/index.html) and I am working my way from her first book to her last. It’s fun getting to know the main character and watching her escapades.

It’s supposed to rain all weekend so it would be a good weekend for reading, except that Abby is here and most four year olds (she’s almost five) are not content to sit around the house and read all day. My guess is we will find some where to go and something to do!

The title of today’s book  is Lilly and Lucy’s Shadow by Christopher Aslan Kennedy and illustrated by Stephanie Hill. Lilly and Lucy are two little girls with crazy pigtails who meet their shadows while playing in the park. The shadows look rather scary but Lilly and Lucy are brave little girls and what they do with their shadows is a testimony of their courage.

And now for the book of the week for Nanas…..

I love mysteries and trying to figure out what happens next.  I have a good friend (my daughter’s mother-in-law) who also loves to read and when she finishes with her books she passes them on to me. One of the latest books in my sack from Patty (Thanks Patty!) is a book called No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay.

A young girl wakes up and her whole family is gone, vanished without a trace. She spends the next 25 years trying to go on with her life but always living beneath a gray cloud of doubt and worry, while wondering what happened. When strange things begin to happen to her she devotes herself totally to learning the truth and by doing so involves her husband and daughter in a dangerous journey. A true thriller I didn’t figure this one out until near the end of the book.

You might not want to start reading this at night. It will keep you up! Enjoy!

If you moms or grandmothers know a child that wiggles (and I’m betting you do). This is a great book to share with them.

Now a book for Nana

A few weeks ago a lady emailed me and asked me if I would read her book and review it. Last week I received it in the mail. The title is 70 is the New 40 and it was written by Barbara Penn-Atkins. I looked at the cover and immediately wanted to be friends with the author. She’s a beautiful lady who doesn’t look a day over 50 and she is driving a bright red convertible. I don’t know about you but I don’t know too many 70 year old women who cruise around in convertibles…but why shouldn’t they? (Besides the fact that it’s murder on your hair)

And that’s really the premise of the book. If you want to do something after you retire, why shouldn’t you? If you want to work part -time or start your own business, why shouldn’t you?

Ms. Penn-Atkins is a Certified Retirement Transition Coach, award winning speaker and she conducts workshops that offer insights to retirement readiness, life options and changing careers. For anyone nearing retirement or thinking about “What do I do next?” this book is a great guide and motivator.
