Why You Should Write Your Grandchildren a Letter

I love the Internet and email but there is no substitute for a handwritten letter. Many years ago when I went away to college there was no such thing as email and so my mother wrote me letters. We talked on the phone too, but those conversations are long forgotten. The letters I still have and still read 40 years later.

My mother died in 1990 at the age of 51 and so her letters are extra precious to me. They aren’t lengthy and are usually about mundane things like what they had for supper, what she was growing in her garden and incidents that happened at the school where she taught. I’m sure she thought they were boring but they weren’t. And I’m sure she had no idea that I would keep them, treasure them and re-read them time and time again.

Mom’s letters to me were one of the best things she left me. They are a written testimony of her love for me and a true gift that I value greatly.

I am blessed that I get to see my children and my grandchild on a regular basis but I still send them cards and write them letters. There is just something special about seeing a loved ones handwriting on paper. If you haven’t written a note or sent a card to someone you love lately, why not do it today?

Thursday Thoughts on Fun With Children

My teenage boys think getting on four wheelers and slinging mud on each other is fun….I don’t.

My husband thinks golf is fun….I don’t. I played miniature golf one time when the boys were little and when I bent over to hit the ball Russell decided to his ball only he missed and hit me in the head hard enough that I saw stars.

My daughter has tried bungee jumping…something I definitely do NOT think is fun.

We all have different things we enjoy doing. Different age children enjoy different activities. What do you enjoy doing with your children or grandchildren? (All comments appreciated!)

Yesterday my almost 5 year old granddaughter had a friend over to visit and they wanted to play with water balloons. I told them to put their swim suits on and go for it. Before the day was over we all got in on the action. If you haven’t had a water balloon fight this summer you might want to try it. Not only did everyone have a great time, it cooled us all off!

This little girl has great aim. She soaked everything she threw at...including my son!

"Nana, I'm going to get you!" says Abby...and she did!

Wordless Wednesday-The Bride

Giving Thanks for Friends, Food and Kin Folk

Once again I am feeling so blessed that it’s hard to know where to begin giving thanks, but I’ll start with praising God for the blessing of the harvest.

My Aunt Mary Alice invited me and two other friends (who were visiting from out of town) to lunch. Most of the food was from her garden and I can verify that it was delicious. If you are not from the south there are two things on the table you might not be familiar with. One is the tomato sauce on the right that we spooned onto our beans (yum) and the other is yellow squash. Over the years I’ve learned that not everyone prepares squash the way we do (lots of folks fry it). The first time my husband (he’s from Michigan originally) saw it he thought it was mashed up corn. Thanks again Aunt Mary Alice for a wonderful lunch! And thanks to God for the sunshine and rain to grow such wonderful food!

Peggy was the main reason we all had lunch together. She was here visiting from Arizona. She and her husband John lived in this area for 23 years and John preached at our church when the twins were toddlers. Peggy couldn’t believe how much the boys had grown and truthfully neither can I.

Giving thanks today too for good friends and healthy children.

And then Sunday we were blessed with a visit from my cousin Martha, her husband, Glenn, and youngest daughter, Brittany.

We visited my brother and his wonderful wife, Kelly, and later that day she surprised us with a big pan of her famous brownies-still warm from the oven.

Brittany says, "They are great with milk too! Thanks Aunt Kelly!"

By the way, the brownie pan is now empty so if you were thinking of stopping by for a visit….no brownies!
