A Kapok Tree and some Kino Sandals

There is a wonderful, warm place to go in the middle of a cold Kentucky winter; the Florida Keys. There are so many fun things to see, great places to eat and so much to do! One of my favorite stops was the Kino sandals factory in Key West.

About ten years ago our daughter was in Key West and purchased a pair of Kino Sandals. She wore them until they fell apart. So when she heard we were going to Key West she asked if we would bring her back a pair. We found the store and brought her two pairs back home.

One of the things that makes the factory so fascinating is that you can actually watch the sandals being made.

There were hundreds of boxes of sandals in all colors and sizes.

You can read more about these sandals here: http://www.kinosandals.com

This is a Kapok tree and you can read about it here:  http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/kapok.htm  The trunk was absolutely huge. I am very tall, almost 6 foot tall and this is one of the few times I actually felt tall!

This little fellow insisted on hanging out with us at the beach. I know he wanted food but we didn’t feed him, just in case his friends came calling too.
Sloppy Joe’s was Hemingway’s favorite hang out so we stopped by and I bought some tee shirts there to take home to my guys.

Our favorite restaurant was The Square Grouper on Cudjoe Key.
These are the shrimp cakes and I loved them. They reminded me of crab cakes but these were extra spicy.
If you are ever in the Keys I highly recommend this restaurant.

Ahhh, it sure was beautiful!

I’m ready to go back and get another pair of Kino sandals. Want to go with me?
